I just finished watching the MP Swirls video (thank you Soap Queen) and have to ask: Why would you need to pour a clear layer as your first layer? Is this just a design decision or needed as the base?

I'm going to try my first MP swirl tomorrow so I'm obsessing a bit over the details. :)

cheers,
dawna

I'm pretty sure that was just so you can see the mica that Anne Marie sprinkled on top. If you don't want that I don't see any reason why you'd have to have the clear bit there. I'm not exactly an expert though.

It is just an aesthetic thing.
But what Anne-Marie found is that since the swirl can only be seen when you cut through the loaf, the top just looked plain and uninteresting.
So by starting with the clear layer and the sprinkling of 'pixie dust' she made the top pretty too!
But it by no means is integral to getting a good swirl or anything like that.

Can't wait to see your soap!
