I've been basically using Avery 8 1/2 x 11 label stickers to make a sheet of small ingredient labels for my soaps that I place behind this hang tag I make and tie onto the bio cello bag I put my soaps in. I'm in the process of making sample soaps in where the soap will be ~1.5 oz (a think cut slice from a loaf). I've decided not to put those in bags but 'wrap' the soap with the same bio material used for the bags that comes in a roll I purchased. When I wrap the soap I will need my ingredient label on the back of the soap to hold the wrap in place. I've researched the company on-line labels and realize it's time to stop buying at the local office supply store now that I'm making more of a committment on this business. - wasn't ready at first to purchase 100 sheets but I see the potential now. Anyway - I'm wondering what label 'material' any of you use when printing your labels (I will be using a inkjet). I know now that using either paper (which I've done) or the current avery label - can/will smudge if water or any dampness gets to it - its' because of the paper/ink from the inkjet. While it's not likely to get wet it does bother me that the potential is there. Here are the choices -- where prices can range from $18-$60 for 100 sheets (weatherproof being the most expensive). Thoughts/input on what you do would be greatly appreciated.

Personally I print on A4 paper and cut out the labels - then stick them on to the cello. They're not waterproof per se but are printed on a laser printer which gives a nice sharp looking image. I don't think they need to be waterproof as they'll be unwrapped pre getting near water.

If I were to choose a type of label, I'd go for a matt laminated type... check out a thing called the Xyron 510, makes regular paper into a sticky type by putting a layer of glue on the back. Google it, I have one but only have the laminated refills which I think are too stiff to use the way I like my labels.

What about buying one sheet of each type and seeing what you like best yourself before jumping into a bigger committment??

The Xyron basically makes a sticker out of anything you put in it (that fits the model you bought of course, the have 1.5" and up) ... the larger models also laminate
I thought about getting one but they are kind of a spendy investment for where I'm at right now

Thanks all - you've given me some thoughts but mainly what I'm deciphering from all of you thus far is that you are just using paper (or maybe some matte finish avery type label) - but beyond that - that's it for your label. I actually have a tiny xyron since I do scrapbooking but the opening is for very tiny paper punch outs. I can easily use a dot roller to get the paper sticky if I need too but I actually do prefer the matte finish of the avery labels. I did order some samples from online labels I'm playing with now. Just thought I'd get some feedback on what was being used by folks. Any new responses are stil welcome!

Thanks
Hilary

Have you tried alibaba.com? It's direct vendors in China that supply just about anything. The problem is...you have to order in bulk-by the thousands usually.

They have labels, shrink wrap, packaging supplies, etc.

I got 250 sheets of my little round 1-5/8" labels from
I don't think you can order directly from them... I ordered mine through Amazon.com

250 sheets of regular matte finish labels cost me $35 including shipping. For these that comes to 6000 labels or about 1/2 cent each.

I shrink wrap my soaps so I don't think there is much chance of the labels getting wet before the soaps are opened and used.

I'm confused. How can you order labels when the ingrediants and name of the soap change. Plus the ounces change. Do you guys mean ordering sheet labels at a better price than Office Max/Staples...? :?

I order blank labels and make my own. I have a laser printer.

Hmmm...does anyone know if the labels from Planet Lable are higher quality than Avery?

I just shrunk wrapped some soaps and had an extremely difficult time getting Avery lables to stick on the shrink wrap.

Any thoughts/comments/feedback...about this?

The quality look really diminshes when I have to really press the label onto the soap-it's wrinkled from the wrap and isn't sticking to well.

Thanks. :(

Unless you are shrink wrapping a very difficult piece, you should be able to get a fairly flat surface to put your label on without wrinkling. Are you using a heat gun or a hair dryer? What type of a shrink wrap are you using?
