Teach Soap

With me, I normally think of a scent (or spend hours browsing websites that sell fragrance and essential oils lol) first and then work from that. I'm really into my 'foody' scents so I try to base my soaps loosely around the food or scent.

So I was just wondering how other soapers came up with ideas for new soap designs?

In those wee hours of the morning, when it's too early to get up, I play with color combinations in my head. Then the general look of what I aim for comes together and I get a feeling for what that soap might represent (soap rocks). I then, ideally, try to match that look with a complimentary fragrance. The soaps often take a turn in a different direction when I'm working on them, as I've very spontaneous when working on one, and their ultimate look is usually a surprise.

At times, I have let others influence me as to what "should" be done. When I go that direction I am never pleased with the results. For example... "make something for the holidays." Well, my type of soap just doesn't lend itself to that, and those efforts end up sitting on my shelf.

Soap making is definitely an art form, and any artist can tell you that too much input can destroy the end results. I really love the different fragrances, but the colors come first in my kitchen. BTW, I do also make a mental note of color combinations I see in different places and apply them to my soaps.

Well for me, and believe me when I say I'm a rank beginner, I am going to start with a beautiful picture. I'm working with a photo of nature right now in my head. Yes it is the colors that hooked me, so now must decided on a scent and a form! Wow who knew it would be such fun! Mella

Everything and anything! Sometimes a colour, sometimes a picture, sometimes a fragrance, sometimes a word or ... well anything. Sometimes it sorts of brews inside me and I come up with a complete design and name and never knew that I was thinking about it.
