I'd like to add Oatmeal to one of my recipes. Can anyone recommend a good place to get organic oats? Do they work well in MP? I did see the "Fine Organic Colloidal Oat Flour" on the From Nature With Love site but they're ground very fine and I'd like to use the oats as a mild exfoliant. Although, I'm worried about buying them whole, as I might just end up eating them!

If you are talking about steel cut oats, I find those very scratchy. I use regular oatmeal and that works fine.

Your best bet for organic oats would be a health food store. I have one here that sells organic oats in bulk.

However, I just buy Quaker Oats. I run them thru my blender to get a finer grind. I found that if I don't grind them then the whole oats make a scratchy bar with oat flakes that fall off in whole pieces in your bath or shower and look and feel weird when you are washing.

I grind mine so I have a mix of ground oatmeal and oatmeal powder. It blends and suspends nicely in the soap base and works great as an exfoliant in the finished soap.

I use oatmeal for my oatmeal, milk, and honey soaps. They have become a top seller for me. I also put in local honey and fresh goats milk into those and a little bit of honey fragrance.

Great info - thank you everyone!

Candybee, you put fresh goat's milk in MP? If so, how much do you use?

A place like Sprouts would have them pretty cheap.

I personally buy Quaker Old Fashion Oats from Costco to eat and put in my soaps. Just my preference. Chop them up to your desire.

I'm curious if you need to add a perservative with oats, does anyone know?

Also, just a warning, oatmeal and safflower soap is excellent for your humans and especially dogs but if you have a beagle like I do they might try to eat the bar.

Fresh milk doesn't go sour in M&P. If fact it makes a lovely rich creamy bar of soap. And for the amount of gm you put in the base it won't hurt it. I prefer a gm soap to regular and I also prefer to use a white base and add my own gm. I have tried fresh, canned, and powder. If you use a powder you must reconstitute it first with distilled water.

I must say that I prefer the canned gm the best. I like to freeze the leftover gm in an ice cube tray and pull out a cube of gm when I need it. It thaws well in my melted base.

I add 1 tbs of gm to 1 lb of base. I know some who add up to 2 tbs to theirs but for my base any more tends to compromise the lather as I am also using other additives.
