Okay forgive my ignorance, but what is the difference between extra fine craft (scrap booking) glitter and cosmetic glitter?

Craft glitter is not body safe.

I guess what I am really trying to figure out is, what is the difference in a glitter that is face/body safe and one that is non-toxic. Is the actual glitter materials (i.e very tiny flecks of glass, stone, paper or plastic, polyester or chemicals used) different.

Not trying to use "regular" glitter but just curious.

Body safe glitter is smaller and made differently.

I was suspecting that. Some glitter is made with metal and can do damage to your eye.

I've actually got a call into Stampendous in regards to their extra fine glitter. I read somewhere on the internet that it was consider cosmetically safe by the FDA. As I don't believe much of what I read on the net, I called the company directly. Am waiting for an answer. Will post my finding here.

This is a very new hobby and I am finding the more I learn....the less I know!

I think, too, if I'm not mistaken, that regular craft glitter and skin-safe glitter are shaped differently. I think skin-safe glitter has rounded edges and look like little discs, whereas craft glitter has the squared-off, pointy edges. And, like Soapbuddy says, the skin-safe glitter is smaller.

I would only use glitter that I knew was made for soap and other toiletries and is cosmetic-grade skin-safe.

And like you said, ukihunter, even cosmetic skin-safe glitter should never be used near the eyes or on the face! I put that tidbit on my labels as a warning.

I've also been told that craft glitters are allowed to have more bacteria, etc., in them when tested than cosmetic grade glitters are. (I can't remember where I got that information, to be honest, but it's something to think about!)

I don't see anywhere that it says skin safe. I wouldn't take a chance on using it.

Skin contact: May cause skin irritation.
Eye contact: May cause eye irritation.
Inhalation: May cause respiratory irritation.
Ingestion: May cause irritation to the digestive tract.

I agree - I would not use this in body products.
