Hi! forgive me if this has been discussed -- I did a few searches and didn't find what I was looking for.

I bought some powder micas to work with, but I make such a mess using them at the time of soap making. I want to turn them into liquid I can just put in a squirt bottle, so I can shelf them until use. I tried the liquid glycerine, but it seemed a little bit too thick to break up the clumps properly.

What is the best way to do this? I have mixed the powders with rubbing alcohol right before use, but will they hold up for awhile if mixed that way into a bottle? Any info is appreciated!

Glycerin is really the best. How much mica are you adding?

Hi Soapbuddy,I have little 1 oz bottles, I've only done one so far to test...so I haven't used any specific mica measurement. The liquid glycerine I have is so thick that it doesn't seem at all like the other liquid colorants I have(red from BB and yellow from WSP)...the bought ones are thin and easy to use, but I can't tell what they're made with. They sure don't smell like rubbing alcohol, but besides the liquid glycerine, will that work for this purpose?

I would try GENTLY heating the glycerin. It should thin out. Then you could add your mica. Shake/mix really well.
or
make enough for just one batch with a little oil or water.

I have found that if I mix my mica to my fragrance oil before adding to the soap, it works amazingly well. Now if I could only remember to do it every time...
Good Luck!

This is an interesting idea... what would the ratios of mica/glycerin be for a 2 oz bottle?

Hi, everybody!

I like the idea of making your own liquid colors; I've never done it myself before.

So you just mix powdered mica or pigment and liquid glycerin? No preservative necessary? And I assume you just store it at room temperature tightly capped?

This is basically what BB's liquid colorants are, right?

Thanks! Cool idea ... :)

I finally made them all a couple weeks ago, they seem to be holding up well at room temp and its much easier to use! they do require some shaking before use, it seems the color settles a bit, but otherwise works great. I got great one oz containers on wholesalesuppliesplus for an excellent price. they're opaque so easy to see thru to make sure the color is mixed in properly. good luck!

Aubrey that is fantastic. And a big thank you for checking back in and sharing your results for your experiment!
