I poured a loaf of mp soap today with three soap logs embedded in it. Of course, the gaps in the logs where the soap was curled came out as holes in the soap when I sliced it. Should I have poured the matrix soap into the logs before I put them in the loaf? I hope this makes sense! Here's how it came out:

Were my logs rolled too tight?
TIA!

I'm much too new to soapmaking to answer your question, but I wanted to say I think your soap is very lovely even if it didn't turn out perfect.

Thanks, Lisa. I had fun experimenting with it. My friends will get the soap for valentine's day; they won't know it's not supposed to have holes!

I saw a tutorial from Anne-Marie, and one of the *hints* was to make sure the MP got into all the grooves...it was curls shaped like roses, and the MP was poured down into the logs, in your case. So, you'd need a vertical column mold instead of a horizontal log. OR....you could rest shorter "logs" on end and pour that way, then cut just a wee bit different...

Ironically, even if the logs did not turn out as you wished, I think they have character about them. They look as though they are trying to say something along the lines of "Buy me!"

In all honesty, I think that imperfections in the way they look as opposed to the way they are mass produced (so long as the soap still does it's job) are preferable to me. I love all the many facets of the character of any handmade thing (even if it is M&P). I prefer the human touch more than I do the mass manufactured touch.

Thank you all for the feedback! Vinca Leaf, I ordered some column molds yesterday for a different project - that's a great suggestion for this project, too, thanks! The Cleaner, I like how you phrased it: the soaps have "character." I hadn't looked at it that way!

I am not sure if this will totally solve the problem but a few ideas....

You could make the rolls either a little tighter or looser

Spray them generously with alcohol before embedding

When embedding put them in slowly at a slant, give the air a chance to rise to the top and come out, don't just put them in totally horizontal.

The other soaps that I have seen like this have the rolls a little more open, not quite as tightly rolled. This probably helps the air escape better when you are putting them into the soap.

I do think they turned out cute anyway! :D

I'm going to try again tomorrow, and roll a little looser. Or, maybe slice the logs before I put them in the loaf. I really like doing loaves...it's like opening a present when you slice them! Thanks again, everyone!

SpottedCat, a simple bar of soap is a beautiful thing, and absolutely you can do it!

Bramble Momma, your tips and the forum are so helpful! I save my scraps to make confetti soap. My mother takes some of the scraps to use as drawer sachets.
