Teach Soap

With CP soap I make a batch based on a fragrance and a color to match. With MP soap I make them colored to the specific mold - like little orange fish in blue ponds, pirates, smiley faces, peace signs, mustaches, etc, etc, etc (I've collected TOO many shapes!!) So what do I make them smell like?

-Do I leave them all unscented and people will buy them just for the specific shape.
- Do I find ONE fragrance that matches the look (like something Ocean for the fish, floral for a flower shape, etc) and make them all that way?
- What if people like the cute design but don't like the way it smells (or disappointed that it *doesn't* smell)?
- Do I pick 4-5 base FO's and make 2-3 of each shape with each FO? (any advice on a handful of "standard" scents that are appealing to people? -- what are favorite kid smells?)

It's a whole lot easier to make a bunch of multi-colored soaps in a single FO vs. trying to make 10 little anchor soaps in 5 different FO's, I never know what people will like. When I sell online I just list it as "unscented" with the option of them picking a scent since I make to order, but having to have things ready on hand for a show makes it hard to decide!

I try to "match" the scent with the soap design but not always. I think a lot of selling has to do with perceptions. If I pick up a flower, I am already expecting it to smell like a flower. Does that make sense?

I agree with Haven - I try to match the mold shape/theme with a fragrance. What I've found, however, with decorative melt and pour, people are more interested in the shape of the soap/design than the fragrance. Many of my large M&P soaps from molds are bought for display purposes. For those I "over fragrance" so the room picks up the scent for a while.

You might have a few unscented pieces, marketed to kids or to those who are very sensitive.

You can always have an order sheet with you - if someone sees something they like and want it customized, you can send it to them (make sure you have shipping rate chart with you to tell them what it will cost) and get payment up front.

Thanks - I've tried having things people can order, but most want something now or never lol. I had some pirate soaps and made pink ones with a victoria's secret dupe and then the black and white one with beau brummel, figuring it'd smell like a manly pirate - but then realized that they were popular with the kids and that wasn't a very kid friendly fragrance. I feel weird making mustache soap scented like grapes or an alien ship that smells like peaches, you know? I just have no idea what some things should smell like or if they'll like the design but dislike the FO choice, or like the design and be disappointed it's unscented.
It's hard trying to bulk make shaped soaps with multiple colors in multiple fragrances without using like 30 measuring cups.
