Oh you two are lucky that you can still remain sane while having insomnia.
I had it too except I've changed my lifestyle//eating habits and make it a point to get at least 8 hours of sleep or I'm a wreck. I get very irritable and can't function without the sleep. Last year I went on sleep meds because the cortisol levels in my body were out of control. This is what happens when you do not get enough sleep. Cortisol is released and that over time leads to Chronic Fatigue syndrome. So I had to get on meds. I'm now cutting back on the meds and taking a natural supplement to slowly take me down. My problem is mind chatter. It doesn't shut off no matter what I do. I've always been that way. If you want a great supplement that promotes alpha waves in the brain and calms you and can stop the mind chatter try large doses of L-theanine it is the most wonderful thing. You can get it at any health food store. But it sounds like your insomnia isn't bothering you so much. Is this true? Mine was so bad I would have jumped of a bridge if I didn't have my cats.. yes, it was that bad. No sleep for weeks alone can kill you. I just feel for anyone who has insomnia because I've been there and had it bad.

Yes, they are lucky....I wish I could be like that sometimes. I have fibromyalgia, which is chronic pain with without sleep. There are alot more symptoms. But I have found if I don't get enough 'good' sleep, my pain gets worse, which makes sleep uncomfortable, which causes even more pain. It's a viscous cycle for me. The sleep meds I was on caused me to have sleep, but so deep that I could not wake up for anything. Another one made me get and eat in the middle of the night (have no memory of that, but I was told about it) So now it's benadryl and valerian. It's not the perfect combo, and usually I don't get to bed until midnight or later, but at least it's summer vacation for my son, so I'm not getting up at 5:30 every weekday morning!

AngelBella, thanks for the tip on the L-theanine-next time I go to town, I'll look. CFS is similar to Fibro, isn't it? If you ever need someone to talk to, I'm available. I too have my furbabies, and besides my son, are my anchor sometimes (literally!! One of my furbabies is over 20 lbs, and if he decides he wants attention, that's it, you are pinned!!)

Army--I know what you mean about comfort food!! My family is like that too!

A few notes form my collage course

One of the first questions is how much of a chemical is absorbed across the skin into the bloodstream, and the rate at which it occurs.

Before a chemical can cause a toxic response in the skin, or indeed anywhere else in the body, it must first penetrate the skin's major barrier and the outermost layer. This horny layer is the stratum corneum which is made up of tightly packed, dead skin cells (keratinocytes). Absorption may also occur through hair follicles and sweat ducts.

The chemical must then enter the living epidermis (which consists mainly of keratinocytes in various stages of development) and it is here that toxicity may start, as the skin responds adversely leading to dermatitis, acne or cancer. If it reaches the upper dermis - which consists of a dense matrix of connective tissue, fibroblasts, macrophages, mast cells, lymphocytes, hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, nerves, blood vessels and lymphatics - the chemical enters the general circulation to be carried to distant sites.

The skin has ways of protecting itself, such as the stratum corneum, sweating, enzymes and certain immune mechanisms, although most chemicals which are applied to skin are absorbed to some degree.

Aromatherapy has become very popular, with natural essential oils applied to the skin to relieve tension and to treat conditions ranging from skin disorders to cancer. Much is made of aromatherapy products being natural and therefore 'pure' and 'safe'. But this is not necessarily the case. Many natural essential oils are potent, concentrated chemicals. For instance, the oil from the pennyroyal plant contains 80 per cent pulegone which is a liver toxin. The essential oil derived from basil may contain over 80 per cent estragole which causes cancer in animals. Safrole is a carcinogen and is found at high levels in sassafras oil, while cinnamon bark oil can cause allergic skin reactions. And an important part of aromatherapy is massage, which increases the blood flow to the area. This, together with the application of essential oils to large areas of skin, may enhance skin absorption.

Using fresh human skin, we found that up to 33 per cent of MDA and 6 per cent of MbOCA could permeate the skin. Skin absorption, however, can vary considerably from one person to the next. Part of our study compared absorption of a variety of chemicals in humans with that in animals. In general, we found absorption is usually higher through animal skin. For the aromatic amines, however, the reverse is true. For example, 13 per cent of MDA permeated the skin in rats compared with 33 per cent in human skin, while for MbOCA the figures were 2 and 6 per cent respectively. This highlights the hazards of relying on animal experiments to predict the absorption of potentially toxic chemicals in humans.

I now the above is very long winded but :

Remember not to use salt scrub if you just shaved your legs or have minor cuts in your skin. If you’re pregnant or have medical problems, consult your doctor first before using any essential oils check with your doctor, especially if you have health conditions such as heart disease, ....

David

Thanks, David, I knew you would come through!!! So, could a salt bar/sugar bar be considered something other than soap because of what you just explained? Do we put labels on these bars to CYA? (cover your butt) Hmmm, never thought that deeply into these kind of things, I just bought and used, but now that I make products, it's a more serious issue.
