Honey, Hi! I noticed on one of the topics (forget which) that you'd posted a pic of a cupcake and a chocolatey (?) (I think) slice. How do you sell those if they look foody?

I find this whole thing totally confusing; a friend of mine spoke to one of his friends who used to be a TS officer and, according to him, the FIRs aren't Law; they're 'advisory'. Duhh ... ? I've spent most of this week on the phone to various people, and it appears to me that transparency is what matters. The people who've had their products confiscated tend to be, in the main, market stall holders, craft market stall holders and anyone who sets up a table somewhere with no clear indication that they're selling soap, not food. Plus ... if they don't have adequate labelling or contact info, they'll be pulled, and their foody soaps will be condfiscated. That makes so much sense. The Safety Assessment matters; it means you know exactly what you can or can't put into your soaps, how to label them and who made them. On that basis I'm selling a few 'borderline' foody soaps next week, properly labelled and not packaged like food. Wish me luck!

Ps: the cupcake and the slice were exquisite!

It was about the time I made those that I found out about the regulations!

The chocolate type soaps I sell aren't in a form that look like they could be mistaken for chocolate (not a bar shape like a chocolate bar... just a simple rectangle).

Best of luck with your sales next week!!

Honey, keep your fingers crossed for me! Your cupcake was truly the most beautiful one I've seen - how you managed to get the height on the topping I have no idea, but it's a crying shame you can't sell those. I'm being very cautious with what I sell next week; most of the stuff is slices, but there are a couple of little cupcake-shaped soaps, aggressively labelled with every warning I can think of (stopped short at 'Danger of Radiation') so we'll see.

When I was in Boots the other day I was checking out their rubber ducks and it said on the back of the pack, "Your child's safety is your responsibility ... [etc etc]". My feelings entirely. I see no reason why we, as sellers, should be responsible for the way adults store and use anything around their houses. Bleach manufacturers aren't; disinfectant manufacturers aren't; toilet cleaner manufacturers aren't - and all of those things are sold in bottles. OK, so they're probably not in transparent bottles, but any trip round a supermarket soft drink aisle will show you how many juices and pseudo-juices are sold in opaque bottles. I honestly feel that this law/regulation/whatever is overkill.

Grrr. On that happy note I've got to go and set an mouse trap for the creature our cat's just brought in. It escaped, but has run behind the dresser in the hall. Oh joy. :(

Well I could take the praise and not say anything but I must admit it was a mould! It was very pretty though, I really liked it (chocolate and lime too, lovely). A friend saw it and wanted lots but I refused, the law even covers giving the things away for free and I just didn't want my first publicity to be bad!

Re the warnings, I guess it's to protect not only kids but people who maybe wouldn't be in a position to make decisions like we would (not sure what the PC term is these days, mentally disadvantaged or something). I agree, it's a matter of parental responsiblity when it comes to kids but don't forget the Big Brother is watching you!!!

Ain't fair but life isn't oftentimes I'm afraid.
