Hi all! I have been making soy candles for quite some time now and love it but have just recently gotten into soap making. I have made a couple bars but I am questioning weather I am using an ok amount of fragrance. How many ml of fragrance should be used per oz of M&P base? what about additives? I bought some liquid silk from BB but I dont know how many ml per oz to use either! Thank you all in advance!

aineheartsyou,

A good rule of thumb is to use 5 grams of essential oil or combination of essential oils per pound of soap. If using fragrance oils, the rule of thumb is 7 grams of fragrance oils or combination of fragrance oils per pound of soap. Most people stick with the use of just essential oils for a more natural soap or to just fragrance oils. If you do combine both essential oils and fragrance oils, start by using 6 grams of your combined oils per pound of soap. After you make your first batch of soap, you may adjust the amount of oils used based on the strength of the aroma. Some more potent essential oils such as peppermint will require less essential oil while other softer aromas such as cedarwood may require a bit more.

This came off the "From Nature With Love" site. I hope it helps!

ps 1 gram = 1 ml

hmm.. i read somewhere on the forums that someone recommended 1/2oz/1lb of base so that would come out to be .9ml/1oz base would it be safe to say 1ml/1oz FO to base? I am only interested in making soap for my family right now so i am only dealing in oz rather than lbs. does anyone know how to use the liquid silk?

I use it....mostly in lotions and butters...but I have used it in soap......but just individual bars.....I just use a few drops ....maybe 7-10 drops per bar.....
sorry that's all I got....I don't put it in large batches.... :)

I have a question too - I've just made a loaf of clear soap fragranced with Cucumber/Melon and when I sliced it it has an oily feel/look to it. Have I used too much FO? Will it dry up? Have I just ruined my entire loaf?? Help!

Let us know if in a day or two the feel improves. I think you will find that it does, at least the feel is different for me in two days with M&P then I wrap it up. Good luck.

I cut the loaf and left the slices on the bench with space between them while I was at work. The oiliness seems to have disappeared (which is a relief!!)
I was on tenterhooks cause I was really pleased with the look of them... really Summery!

File comment: The soaps are actually very transparent - which isn't that obvious in the picture!

PurpleMolly - your loaf soap looks nice! The crinkle cut gives it an added pizazz :)
