Don't forge that the M&P base has preservative in it already.

Be careful of adding natural things like, for instance, calendula leaves... they can go brown very very quickly. I usually make a small amount first to see how things work.

One of the nicest things I added was toasted coconut (dessicated coconut in a hot pan - smells wonderful). It's a nice scrubby feeling and gives off it's own aroma.

From my experience, things like lavender, calendula, petals, leaves, whatever you want to call them will turn brown. Dried patchouli will bleed green into the soap. The only thing that doesn't turn are things like ground apricot seeds, oatmeal, etc.

yeah, i mistakenly thought i could put whatever dried things into my soaps and stocked up on rose hips- kind of a bad idea. all my soaps, after a week or so, look like they have red blobs in them instead of rose hips. calendula leaves look ok, i think. soapwort and strawberry leaves seem to be fine.

i have a question about oatmeal though. i made 4 bars of the goats milk/honey/oatmeal soap i posted about earlier in the thread- they came out great, one of my favorite soaps i've made. i put one in my bathroom and one at the kitchen sink. the one in my bathroom is difficut to use because the oatmeal is very hard, and the one at the kitchen sink the oatmeal is very soft and almost mushy. do you think that something weird happened in the making of the soap or does it have to do with the 2 different environments?

If I add ground oats or pumice to my soap how much would I need to add if I am only using 100g of melt and pour goats milk soap at a time

Hi, Tanja. I've never worked with pumice before, but I have added ground oats to my M&P. I usually use 1 teaspoon of oats per pound of base, and I'd probably start with the same for pumice. Some folks use more, some use less. I generally stick to 1 tsp per pound of base, though, for my additives.

There are 16 ounces in a pound, so 100g would be about 3.5 ounces, which is almost one-fourth of a pound. For a batch that size, I would try 1/4 teaspoon of oats and see how you like that. :)

Hi jrose, I noticed you are in Bossier City! (yes still?) I am about an hour and a half away, in Winn Parish. :)

Will you be coming to or selling at the Maker's Fair this Saturday the 14th. I will have a small table there, my first craft fair or public sales at all really outside of friends and coworkers.

vexvelour what did you put in your oatmeal honey goatmilk soap? I'm thinking of doing something similar, but maybe an oatmeal, brown sugar, goatsmilk bar? I have goats milk MP base, so how much of the additives do I put in?
