The other day I made an 'ocean' soap - coloured it beautifully with blue and sea green mica, scented it with a typical marine-type scent. I also put some dried seaweed in the bottom of the mould, poured the soap over the top and when I took it out of the mould it looked really cool with the sea weed on partially embedded into the top of the soap.
Buuuut, it smells weird. I don't know if it's the seaweed or what, but it does kinda smell fishy! But kinda like bad fish. I can smell the FO too, but it has this underlying fishy smell that just ain't good or right! Anyone else had this when using seaweed? I'm sure I didn't overheat the soap when melting it, I'm always very careful not to. I've just cut off the seaweed bits from the soap, but the smell is still there, so if it is the seaweed, it's infused it's smell though the entire soap.
I'm really bummed as it looked so nice too :(

I'm sorry to say that seaweed will do that. It works better in CP soap.

I did something similar... my first batch - stinky soap  !!!!!!! Although it was cp and I used kelp powder. Smelled like dead fish but as this soap has aged the smell has nearly gone and it is useable by us and very good friends that understand! I think if one is to use kelp or seaweed the FO would have to be very strong. Even though you should wrap the soap maybe letting it breathe for awhile would be advised ???

Thanks guys,
Well I did let it breathe for a bit because I thought it would die down and it did a bit, but it was still quite distinct (or should that be distinked? ). So I cut off the seaweed ends after a couple of days, remelted and let it set overnight to see if that had helped. Well, the smell had improved but when I cut the soap and held it up to the light it looked like a cloud of bacteria had started growing in it! It seriously looked like a bloom in a petri dish. So i binned the whole batch.
I've spoken to other soapers about it and most seem to not have had any problems with using dried seaweed, so I must've done something wrong somewhere. Oh well, it's all learning!
