Hi all :]

I haven't attempted a soap containing oatmeal yet(!) but will be in the next day or two. I was just wondering what the general consensus is on how fine or coarse the oatmeal should be? Or what is best?

My mum thinks a very very fine ground oatmeal will be best, where as I bought more of a grainier oatmeal.

What do you think is best?

Sarah

You need it to be really fine and it has to be the long cooking oats not the quick type(sorry the brain is dead this morning and l can't think what the proper name is)I love Brambleberries Oatmeal soap Base which l started buying after a couple of tries at adding my own,l just couldn't get it fine enough so use my oats for decorating the tops now.

I buy they regular Quaker Oats Oatmeal (not the quick cook) and put it in my coffee grinder. Then I grind it until it is almost a powder. I have tried it not so fine and it is scratchy to me. Hope this helps some.

Depends on what you are adding the oatmeal for. If you want a light exfolient soap then you'll want a finer ground grain, less for heavier texture and more scrub. Some even like to add whole grain especially to the tops of their soap for an interesting texture. Oat flour will not add much of an exfoliating texture. An oatmeal soap can be very gentle and soothing for skin.

I buy whole rolled oats and put them in my blender for a short burst so I have a mixture of fine and course ground oats. Thats the way I like it best for me and my customers.

You can use any type oats you like; whole rolled oats, instant oats, oatflour, etc.

Hi, YummyMummy!

I have a mini mortar and pestle that I picked up at a kitchen store and I use that to grind my oats. Takes a little elbow grease, but I like that I get differences in the texture of the oats (plus I'm too lazy to drag out the blender  ). I use the old-fashioned oats, too, not the quick-cook.

Ground oats will suspend easier throughout the bar than the heavier whole oats, which have a tendency to sink to the bottom of the mold (the top of your soap). That may be what you're going for, though, and it can look very cool.

Let your base cool quite a bit before pouring if you want the oats to suspend. I pour when I feel it getting tacky and sticky.

And you can always buy an oatmeal base. I like to add my oats to a goat's milk base.

Good luck on your project! :D

Thank you all for the great responses :]

It's definitely given me food for thought. I'm probably looking more towards a more finer ground oatmeal. But I may change my mind as this proves my mum is right! :P

Hehe thanks again!
