I have seen 2 part molds for making oval type bars of soap. I'm wondering a couple of things about them.

Can they be used with melt and pour soap base?

How in the heck do you put the halves together to make 1 bar? :?

Sorry but I'm new and don't know the lingo yet :)

Hi, tlc!

Are you talking about 3D soap molds? I've never used them myself, but it sounds like you hold the two halves of the molds together with a couple of heavy-duty rubber bands and then pour through a funnel at the top of the mold. And it sounds like you can use M&P base with the 3D molds.

Bramble Berry has some here: http://www.brambleberry.com/3D-C61.aspx

Have fun soaping! :D

Yeah, I guess that is what I'm talking about lol.
Yes, after looking at the link that is what I'm talking about! So a rubber band holds them together. Seems simple enough.

Another question,

On my very first mold that I used I smeared a wee bit of Vaseline on the inside of the mold, is that the right way or not?

Never mind my last question. I see there is a link on the link that has more info. Sorry for being a pain in the rear.

Hi, tlc!

You're not a pain in the rear! Ask away -- that's what we're all here for.

Are you having trouble getting your soap out of your molds? Just wondering because of the Vaseline ...
I never add anything like that to my molds, but I know it's tough sometimes to get the soap out.

Tips? Don't try to unmold too soon. Give it the minimum four hours or, ideally, overnight. Also, try to gently push the inside of the mold away from the soap to release the tension and get an air bubble working for you. It's easier to do this if you don't quite fill your mold to the top -- you'll have a little room for your fingertip. Then you can flip it over, start pressing at the bottom, and guide the air bubble around to release. If you absolutely cannot get it out of the mold, you can pop it in the freezer for a few minutes, but I do this only as a last resort.

Hope that helps (and I hope you wanted all of my silly tips!). :D

No, no, tip away I say! :) You know how us newbies are. We want to know everything lol!

Well I have only done one soap mold lol! The mold I used was a flat one that made 8 four oz. bars. The directions that I found said to smear just a wee little bit of the vaseline on the mold to help release, so I did lol! I did try to take it out of the mold pretty quick though according to what your saying here. I think maybe 2 hours?? The soap was set up fairly hard BUT when I got it out of the mold I discovered some of my bars had a little curl to them   Those are keepers for me.

What surprised me the most was how easy it was to make the soap, well, not make it really but get it melted and add all the goodies to it. Just pop it in the microwave for a bit and stir, stir, stir. I'm used to making candles and it's a little more complicated than that. Boy was I a happy camper when my soap turned out. I strutted around like a proud peacock  The DH got sick of hearing about them.

I want to ask a question about coloring so should I start a new thread?

You will find out that I can be a rather long winded bugger sometimes

For the 3-d molds that need funnels, do they come with holes in them already? What kind of funnel do you use or do the molds come with funnels already? I am wanting to use one of the 3-d massage bars that BB has to make a solid lotion bar.

I'm a bit late in responding but have been soaping for gift giving (I love that excuse!). The molds come with a built in funnel and come with the rubber bands. They are great fun. I'm also a weaver so I weave my own cords for soap-on-a-rope and I've had success (most of the time but not all the time - grin) with doing two colors. I've gone for the swirl look and I've done the design portion in one color and then when that cools I've spritzed it, put the mold together and the poured the 2nd color in. Do pay attention though. once I had one half upside down so all the soap just flowed out the bottom (LOL)
