Hello, I am having a problem with surface discoloration that I think is being caused by alcohol.

I am using BB Goatmilk MP, Oatmeal Milk and Honey FO, ground oatmeal and a small amount of calendual leaves and pouring into the Bee and Honeycomb mold. I am spraying alcohol into the mold after I have the bee cooled and then pouring in my soap, then spraying alcohol again to get rid of bubbles (way easy!). Everything looks great, but when the bars cool they have a purple-ish tinge on the entire top surface (bottom of soap) and mottled on the honey comb. I also poured a tray mold using just Goatmilk MP and FO and had the same problem in a splotchy sort of way. I tried switching spray bottles and using fresh alcohol, but got the same results.

Except for this problem, the soaps look just sensational and are wonderful in the shower as they are quite long-lasting and the scent just makes a person feel warm and happy!

Since this discoloration washes off when I use the soap the first time, and does not appear on the interior of the soap when a bar is cut, I do think it must be the alcohol. Has anyone else experienced this?

Thank you for input - and Happy Holidays!

Holly

What type of alcohol are you using?

Thank you for responding! Standard isopropyl, but I am thinking that more than a "spritz" is coming out of my sprayers - could this be caused by too much alcohol? The spray is not super-fine.

Thank you!

Sounds like you could use a fine sprayer then. From the pic it looks pretty good!

Thank you, SoapBuddy! Unfortunately when seen up close, they are pretty ugly! On the bee soap, downright spoils the effect by looking all blotchy. I did not drench with alcohol or anything, but thought if that is the problem then surely someone else has also experienced this unwanted color in their soaps. And as a CP soaper, no experience of my own in MP.

Happy Christmas!

I've read your post a couple of times, but I could be going blind! Are you using vanilla color stabilizer? I couldn't see that you were and OMH will discolor and if the FO is not incorporated evenly I have sometimes got uneven discoloration.

Thank you, GoldenEarthGirl for pointing this out about OMH FO. I did not use vanilla stabilizer when using that FO. The picture I posted is actually of another batch using a different FO which is the worst discoloration I have had. It was a blend of two kinds of mango something.

When discoloration occures due to FO, is it only apparent after soap is completely cooled? You will probably crack up, but I literally sat there on the last batch watching it to see at what point it occurred! It took almost 2 hours to appear -I was knitting so it wasn't tedious.

I just got home from purchasing a spritzer type sprayer and 91% alcohol, but I don't have the vanilla stabilzer on hand. Everyone around here who smells OMH just goes crazy for it, but I have several other fragrances I could use in the meantime. Maybe I said this before - I just thought that maybe when experienced MP'ers looked at that picture it would be totally obvious what I did incorrectly. After only doing goatmilk CP (I live on a ranch in the middle of nowhere and have goats) for years, AND it being winter I thought I would try MP because it seems so flexible and fun! I'm hooked already...

Thank you loads for considering this problem and suggesting probable cause!

Have you ever tried titanium dioxide to make the brown lighter?

Hi SoapBuddy! Thanks for continuing to chat with me about this. The color I am getting is purple, no brown at all. If it were brown that wouldn't be a problem with what I am doing right now, but the purple streaking thing is not very appealing. Tomorrow I will make another batch...down to my last pound of goat milk MP! I do want to try that when I need perfectly white soap though.

BTW, your Agave soap looks wonderful - the color, the picture and the choice of soap holder! One of my fav parts of reading this forum has been exploring other soaper's sites and appreciating their creativity. I am a true soap nut - I just love looking at, making and using handcrafted soap and I really like your presentation!

Okay :)

Well, I can say I was once sent a free sample of a Mango FO, and I made a stunning MP loaf, never thinking for a minute it would have a vanilla base. But it was appalling :(. It went a murky brown/mauve color and it was all splotches not an even color.

With reference to the time frame I have found some FO's discolor quite quickly, some some slowly and not all appear to discolor evently. I have a feeling that the uneveness may be related to not being mixed through thoroughly enough.

Hope this helps :)

Okay GoldenEarthGirl! I read this outloud to my husband and when I got to the splotchy mauve color part he said "Yes!!!!! that is the description!!" Another thing that totally makes sense to me is that the very worst of it was in the mango batch which was only the second one I had done - that is the one in the picture and I am thinking that I did not stir that one as well as I did the bars that had oatmeal in them (suspension thing) - in those bars the mauve was more diluted looking.

Thank you! :D :D

Okay GoldenEarthGirl!! This sounds like an exact description - I read it to my husband and he said "Yes!!" when I got to the splotchy, mauve part. (You know he so wants me to solve this so he doesn't have to hear me constantly talk about it!)

Since the mango was the worst of it and that was only my second batch, I think you are entirely correct on the under-mixing call - on the oatmeal bars I stirred much more because of the suspension thing. Interesting how FO's react differently in MP and CP (okay, fascinating to me even if it is frustrating sometimes!).

Thank you! :D :D

Sounds to me that it could be your FO... try making something with an entirely different FO (say an ocean one or something, something that wouldn't have anything vanilla-y in it) and try it again (just a tester one, you can use it yourself... that will tell you for sure if it's the FO or not. I'm not convinced it's the alcohol to be honest.
