Hello,

I wandered upon this forum when I decided to research making my own soap. My main interest is in creating non-toxic chemical free soaps that are good for the skin. This would mainly be for personal use and/or friends and family. I am also looking at this as a somewhat fun little side hobby that could create a healthier environment (in the bathroom) as well as maybe save some money (in the long haul). I was unaware that the cold pressed "old style" of making soap was as intricate as it seems. However, if my experiments are successful I may want to give a whirl a few times.

On to the questions:

1) I simply want to add ingredients to a soap base. I am not sure if you can just freely add whatever you would like to a M&P base, or if there are "rules" to follow. The things that I have written down would include different oils (coconut, avocado, grape seed, sweet almond), lemon juice, aloe vera and peppermint herbs. In my short little research stint, these are some of the options I would like to add to my soaps (not all at once!). I would assume you could only add a certain amount of oils based on how much base you are using (as it may change the consistency/makeup)... but that is just an assumption.

2) Are the M&P bases non-toxic? I am not really sure what constitutes the makeup of a M&P base. I understand it is glycerin, but I am a little foggy on the details passed that. Any more information would be wonderful.

3) Is it more cost effective than buying non-toxic chemical free soaps?

4) Any input from others who have made non-toxic, chemical free, good for your skin soaps? (ingredients, directions, bases etc.)

5) Will oils added to a base go rancid over time? My main interest in making soap came from the idea of making my own "old style" shave soap. I was always curious why they were only sold in little disks. I wanted to take a container (similar to a smaller yankee candle - sealable) and make a larger batch that could last quite a long time. However, I am curious if these small disks are made for a reason (other then to make money).

Thanks for your time and input, I appreciate it.

There is much more in the soap than glycerin. There are so called natural MP bases out there, but from what I've heard they don't lather as much. I make cold process soaps mostly and have had excelent results from them. At least that's what my customers tell me. :) In cold process a by product is glycerin, but it's not added.

For MP soap base, I would not add more than 1 TBS. of any extra oil or butter. More than that could make your MP soap soft or sticky. Lemon juice or aloe vera are not good choices for MP soap. As far as non-toxic either MP base or cold process soaps would be better for you than the store bought, grocery variety type. Any soap can go rancid over time.

The reason shaving soaps are made round is to fit them into a shaving mug.

You can also usually find Melt and Pour bases that already have additives in them. (Shea, Goats milk, Hemp, etc.) So that you do not have to add them yourself. These will be formulated with the added oils already so there won't be any loss of lather or loss of hardness to the bar. :D

Also - Welcome to the Forum! :D

I just had a question and thought I would add this to the list.
What does EDTA stand for? Also, what on earth is the Titanium Dioxide for? That sounds kind of scary! lol
I noticed these listed in the BB based for clear and white MP soap base, and was just wondering.
Thanks!!
