Hi all,
I do a lot of rescue volunteer work and would like to make a soap for dogs. Oatmeal and sunflower oil are great for a dog's skin and coat. Does anyone know if you can add these products to a M&P base? Will they change soap color? Will they spoil? Does a preservative need to be added? (hmmm...am I giving all of you a great business idea??? I'm planning on making a dog soap basket for silent auctions at rescue events. This is the time of year for those events. I have a dog bone mold and paw print molds-will probably throw in a human soap and a business card.)

Yes, you can add these to an MP base. No more oil than 1 TBS. per lb. of base. The oatmeal will need to be added just when the soap is getting thick. Otherwise it will sink to the bottom.

I made my first dog (or human) soap. I found out that it's actually 1 tsp./lb of oil added. Since my hubbie is in the dog business his recommendation was oatmeal and either safflower, sunflower, or avocado oil. I used a shea butter base. Limited amount of fragrance-only drops from a pipette per 4 oz. Also used about 1 ml of Bramble Oatmeal & Honey essential oil. ***Please beware that essential oils can be toxic to cats and other animals so do not use the soap on anyone/thing but human or dog. I used safflower oil for my soap. I added Quaker old-fashioned oats on the top of the mold which is really the bottom of the soap once the soap started to firm up. One site recommended lavendar or citronella essential oil-I didn't have either so I used Bramble's Oatmeal & Honey eo. Can't wait to share/sell it to my rescue group. Oh, I also added 2 drops of Bramble brown to give a tan color.
:D

please keep in mind that a dog's nose is far more senstive than a human's, so a mild smell to us would be overwhelming to them. keep it very light!

although to be fair, my dog lives for the moment when he can dig through the trash so he can't be that much of a delicate flower, lol.

I made some dog soap bars and got the recipe from David Fisher on About.com. I sold it at the craft fair and it sold real well. I also gave some to my mom to try on her dog. Only thing is that you should know is that ALL ESSENTIAL OILs will make cats sick so if your husband is going to wash dogs using it make sure to mark it for dogs only and to never wash a cat with it if it. I made special warning labels for the ones that I sold. I know that most people don't wash cats, in fact cats hate to be washed, but I have known some to do it. Here's the link to the recipe I used which starts with any M&P soap base so I used an Oatmeal M&P base. It did turn out fantastic! Please let me know if you do make it how it worked for you. There are 4 different one's at this link. I made the Walk in the Woods and it smelled great! Good luck!

By the way...you can also make bath bombs for dogs. Here's a recipe I have on file for one.
