Teach Soap

I just made my first 3D soaps this morning and while they turned out beautifully, I had a problem and I don't know if this is typical. When I unmolded the soaps, in addition to the extra soap where I poured through the funnel, all around the actual soap was a thin film which needed to be trimmed. Is this normal, or did I do something wrong? I knew that some would be at the funnel, but for the rest of the edging, it's as though I didn't put the mold together tightly enough (I did, plus used the rubber bands). I didn't expect that some of the soap would seep through beyond the mold.

If this is typical of using a 3D mold, what is the best way to trim it? I used a sharp paring knife and trimmed it as best as I could but it's not perfectly even. And how do you handle the soap without messing it up? I used gloves so I wouldn't fingerprint it, but I was still afraid of it starting to melt, you know what I mean?

I don't know. I only used these molds for CP. Maybe it will dry out being in the open air?

I have always had to trim the edges of my 3-D soaps with MP. I just use a sharp small knife to go around the edges. After you are done you can spray the soaps with alcohol and that should help get rid of your fingerprints.

If you've ever done ceramics it is much like trimming up greenware before firing. You may want to wear gloves to avoid fingerprints if you will be handling the soap excessively to do it.
