Even though it's optional to list ingredients on soaps, I just wanted to make a request of those that do list your ingredients: find out what the ingredients are in your base. I have seen so many sellers list their melt and pour soaps as "Glycerin, lavender essential oil." Which is totally wrong! Glycerin soap base is made of many ingredients, not just glycerin and whatever else you add to it.

I know that many of you know this already so sorry if I'm preaching, but for newbies who might get their soap from a craft store where ingredients are not on the package, please do some research before making up your nice labels! Thanks!

It was my understanding that since M&P is more of a detergent, then a "natural" soap, you had to include the ingredients on the label. But if you were making CP/HP you didn't, since it is a true soap.

No, that's not true. MP soap is made with saponified oils just like CP, with added ingredients to make it clear and remeltable. It is a true soap.

MP soap can be detergent based or made with ingredients like CP with a couple of ingredients to make it clear. So I would say it depends....

Hm. Yes, you're right soapbuddy. I just looked at some bases from the major suppliers and see the different formulations.

In regards to this thread, though, I don't believe MP is given any separate rules about labeling - it gets the same treatment as CP soap.

I list ingredients on everything, to CYA. What happens if something you put in your soap is something someone is highly allergic to? How would you feel if you caused someone serious hurt? These are the questions I asked myself before I even started giving my soaps (and other products) away. I myself couldn't live with myself if I hurt someone unknowingly with my soap. Then, because our country is so sue happy, I figured it's best to be upfront and honest with what I put into my soap, so I use the ingredient list for the like CP base (bb) and then whatever else I may put in. Like labeling coffee "hot", it's kinda weird, but I think it's better safe than sorry....

I always list all my ingredients. I was told a long time ago that you do not have to list ingredients for soap but if you do for one ingredient then you must list all. IE "Goats milk soap" if you say this on your label you have listed an ingredient and now must put them all on.

I sell my soaps online and at craft fairs and I list all the ingredients in my soap. I make melt and pour soaps and use the high quality real soap sold at Brambleberry. I'm not only a business owner, I'm a customer of other products as well and even if it wasn't the law, I'd still like to be an informed consumer so I'm sure my customers would like to be too.

I'm with Serah. I list all my ingredients on all my products. Bath Salts, fizzies and lotions included. I just like to be informed on what is going on my skin. I list the ingredients of my cold process and lotions on my site and plan to do that with the m&p and such later today. That way they know what is in them before they order.

I am scared to death of hurting anyone (allergies and so on) so I list my ingredients on my site and enclose a card (listing same) with each order.

Hi there,

We sell our soaps at craft fairs on a weekly basis and list ALL ingredients clearly (beginning with the largest by quantity) by their INCI (International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient) name.

Your soap base supplier should provide you with MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) information which should include a list of the soap base ingredients. The MSDS information is also useful for providing ancillary information on toxicity, risk and safety assessment, environmental data and correct storage, which in turn can be placed as advirory warnings on labels where appropriate.

Not sure what the requirement for ingredients listings is in the USA but in Europe ingredients are listed by weight in descending order. When ingredients are 1% or less of the total weight they may be listed in any order.
