Teach Soap

Hi - Being brand new to soap making out of my home, I'm reading that it is very important to be insured in case someone would have a reaction to my soap. Does everyone do this automatically? I'm just in the beginning stages and have no idea. Do i have to have insurance in order to sell at a craft fair? What about if i did soap favors for a baby shower etc? Thank you.

This is a thread I wrote for CP soap, but lot of the points still pertain to MP soap as well.

Hi, Nancy! You can check out RLI for insurance: https://www.insuremyhomebiz.com/index.asp. Their rates are good, but you have to make less than $5,000/year for their insurance.

The Handcrafted Soapmaker's Guild also offers insurance with their Professional Soapmaker's membership: http://www.soapguild.org/industry/insurance-faq.php.

If you are selling, I would also look into county and state requirements for licenses/permits pertaining to running a business.

Personally, I would get insurance before I started selling to the public. Some folks probably don't have insurance, but I wouldn't want to take the gamble. I have heard of craft shows sometimes asking for proof of liability insurance but I have never encountered it myself.
