Sodium Stearate....Natural cleansing agent which is the result of saponifying palm vegetable oil with caustic soda
Sorbitol...A natural humecant that is used to improve the clarity of soap.
Propylene Glycol....A natural humecant that acts as a wetting agent for certain ingredients ,It assists certain ingredients mixed with water
Sodium Laurate Sodium...This a no no for soap use l get confused over the different variations in the names but although this is sometimes claimed to be safe being derived from coconut it is the manufacturing process that seems to be the problem. Can cause a lot of different problems not just for the skin but for other organs in the body,
Laureth Sulphate...Same for this one
Sodium Chloride..Common old salt.
Stearic acid...is a fatty acid found in many food items such as beef fat and cocoa.
Lauric acid...Fatty acid derived from coconut oil for additional emolliency & laurel oil.Bubble former in soap.
Vanilla Stabilizer...haven't got a clue what this is made of ..sorry
I am no expert so l will be only too glad to be corrected if l have got something wrong this information is just stuff l have in my research folders.

Hi Pops1. Thanks for that info but now I am really confused. :?

This is the ingredients for Crafters Choice Goats Milk for example from WSP:

Propylene Glycol, Sorbitol, Glycerin, Goat Milk, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Stearate, Sodium Myristate, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Triethanolamine, Water, Titanium Dioxide

This has Sodium Laureth Sulfate in it and if it is a no no why does everyone seem to have it in there? I know Bramble Berry has Sodium LAUREL Sulfate i in their general bases. (I think they are basically the same but different somehow). Being new to the soaping world, this is really confusing to me. lol. What does everyone think about this? Do you all steer WAY clear of any SLS at all or do you just use it because it is still better then the stuff from the store and you just can't call it natural? I guess my brain tells me that if it is so bad that these 2 very reputable companies would not carry it. I can see Walmart stuff having it though.

Thanks for any further help on this. :)

I suppose its a personal choice SLS gives a terrific lather but is drying to the skin so l make sure my base is free from it ,here is a website for you to look at so you can make up your mind.
http://www.natural-health-information-c ... lfate.html
or this which is the other view.

Hopefully some more experienced soapers can help you more on this subject.

Pops1- Thanks for your info. I guess I will keep studying and learning. I appreciate your info. I also love your quote at the bottom. :) Very cute.

Tartchef- I just received BBs LCp clear a week or so ago and have just started making things with it. I have read on this forum I thinky people saying that the LCP is more drying and people wanting to add butter etc to it. (No I think it was the reviews on BBs site about the LCP) so I guess it has less moisture? When you said you noticed a big improvement on your skin when you stopped the SLS, did you find it more moist or was it something else? The ratings for the LCP on BB site even has people talking about the dryness of it and for me it was a bit drying also. So, I am wondering if maybe I just need to get use to it? I don't know. I know people love lather but I can tell them that lather is not a key factor in a "soap" that is good for your skin. But, if the LCP is less moisturizing, I don't want to advertise it as Very Moisturizing.. Does that make sense? :?

I am really trying to learn all I can about this before really going all out in the selling part. The labeling part is probably the hardest thing for me. What to actually put on the labels. I saw someone talked about saying May Contain Nuts just because she works with almonds in the kitchen and the nuts COULD migrate to the soaps somehow. That seems pretty smart to me but my label is going to be a mile long. lol. Thanks for any more info. :)

Sodium Laureth Sulfate makes my skin dry and itchy. I prefer not to use it. LCP I can use fine. I do add one TBS. of shea butter to 1 lb. of the base.

I don't add anything to my LCP, & haven't experienced any excess dryness - DH has chronic dry patches, & those have cleared up after 9+ months of using the LCP almost exclusively. We find it cleans without stripping or leaving our skin overly dry or moisturized - it's a nicely balanced formula, IMO. If you're used to using superfatted, extra moisturizing beauty-bar-style soaps, I can see how the LCP would feel drying in comparison. I don't advertise my soaps as specifically moisturizing, just cleansing, & haven't had any feedback that indicates customers have found it drying.

As for the lather, my customers do rave about the suds they get - it's super thick & fluffy, esp if used with a bath pouf. :D
