Has anyone used BTMS 50? I'm looking for something to emulsify butters, oils, and an alcohol-based extract. I started reading about BTMS, and it seems it's usually used in conditioners, and is safe in leave-on products, but I can't find reference to it with alcohol. Any ideas?

It is used in conditioners because it is a cationic. I wouldn't use it as an emulsifier for butters and oils. Better to use the HLB system that combines different emulsifiers. EG You use a low-value emulsifier such as glyceryl stearate combined with a high-value such as polysorbate. If you look up the HLB system you'll see how.

By the way, alcoholic systems are different. I can't advise since I do not use alcohol in any product.

I have used BTMS 25 and 50 in lotions, one had an alcohol suspended additive. It woulds well, but I prefer just plain old E-wax myself. I find the BTMS leaves a film of some sort. I use E-wax and cetyl alcohol or E-wax and staeric acid. My favorite lotion is E-wax, staeric acid, sweet almond oil, avocado oil, shea butter and chamomile extract! With a preservative of course!
