It seems that vanilla is not just a problem with CP soap.
I just had a batch of shampoo separate. Thought it was my formula but then I found a note on Swift's blog about it.
Vanilla is so nice, what a shame it causes so many problems. Fortunately it was only a 1L batch, I will have to throw it away.

I pretty much gave up on vanilla.

I always have people ask why the vanilla soap is really dark brown... Most don't care about the color because they love the scent.

By the way, if this can be of help, I always like to pass on info:

The amount of vanilla used was just 1.5g in 1L of shampoo, i.e. 0.15%
Not only did the (cream) shampoo separate, but the 'slip' was poor, too.
There was also 1g of coconut fragrance = 0.1% so, 0.25% fragrance in total.

I sometimes use benzoin essential or fragrance oil for a vanilla smell. It is sweeter, almost like a burning vanilla candle mixed with syrup. It is dark colored but maybe will act differently in your products than vanilla.

Reaction to the essential oil only or is there something in the fragrance oil that may cause a problem as well?
I have not used the essential oil yet in any products, good to know about the allergy.

I guess that is another question, if you are using essential oils do you list each one on your label? I had been putting "essential and/or fragrance oil" on there only so far...

I would put simply on the label :contains benzoin: I normally list each essential oil that I use, but not everyobody does. I would not put essential and/or fragrance. Which one is it? If it's fragrance, list it as a fragrance. If it's EO FO combo, I would still list it as fragrance. If it's EO's only, put essential oil blend or the actual EO's used.

Someone I know makes CP soap with EO's and it has totally put me off the idea of using them because of two reasons:
1. The price. The soap is expensive enough as it is.
2. They smell horrible. Apparently he has customers who like that. I can't begin to describe it. The worst one had kelp, it stank like rotten fish.

Oh yes, I have one here he said was Tea Tree. It smells awful. I really don't like those kinds of smells. I like fruity, that kind of thing. In fact he's making soap with aromas such as Chanel No. 5 as well, he says his customers love it.

My first soap was lavender but everyone went "Oh, it smells like floor cleaning liquid" so I never use lavender now. What a shame.
