Testing the properties of Dehyton AB-30, Dehyton G, and Dehyton K.
Purpose: to determine required amount of NH4Cl to achieve max viscosity.

Method:
Prepared in each case a blend of ALS (33% in water) and the test amphoteric (33% in water)
In each case 20% of anionic was added to 10% amphoteric (solution strength 33% in each case)

1. AB-30. As soon as the two were blended the result turned as thick as hair gel.

2. G. No thickening on blending.

3. K. No thickening on blending.

The amphoterics all contain about the same amount of sodium chloride. I hypothesize that in the case of K and G, the NaCL is not available to thicken the anionic.

Tests were then made by adding 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5% NH4Cl (ammonium chloride) to items 2 and 3. In each case thickening was noted, mild at 0.5%, and maximum at 2.5%. This corresponds well with the salt curve for ALS and I think, confirms my hypothesis.

Yes. Well, more or less. If you Google them you can find all the data. What I have is:

Dehyton AB-30: This is one of the components of a well known brand bath and shower cream. It is a "derivative of a fatty amine of betaine structure". It's an amphoteric surfactant.

Dehyton G: INCI name = sodium cocoamphoacetate, another amphoteric surfactant, very mild.

Dehyton KB: coco amide propyl betaine. It's an additive (co surfactant) for shampoos that are designed to cause zero irritation to mucous membranes, eyes, etc.

I'm using ammonium lauryl sulfate as the primary surfactant.

I prefer Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate instead of ammonium lauryl sulfate as that one makes me itch. I bought liquid surfs from The Herbarie, just haven't had the time to play with them.
