I've seen a few people add cocoa butter or shea butter into their bath bombs. As far as I've made, I've only ever done baking soda, citric acid, sea salt, fragrance, and witch hazel.

I'd like to branch out and saw people adding oil, which I would assume you just mix in. I guess I sort of have two questions. Would you mix the oil with a polysorbate so that it would disperse in the water rather than just float there? And also, how do you incorporate a butter, like shea? Just squish it in with your hands? Or should it be melted and have a polysorbate added into it also?

Just trying out some new things seeing if I want to expand my line or not.

Melt the butter, then mix in the polysorbate. I prefer the polysorbate, so the oil or butter doesn't leave a bathtub ring, make the skin greasy or leave the tub slippery.

I have another questions....about how much butter/oil should be added to a mixture.

Here's what I did last night:

8 oz Baking Soda
4 oz Citric Acid
2 oz Fine Sea Salt
.5 oz shea butter
.25 oz avocado oil
.75 oz polysorbate 20
3 mL Essential Oil

I mixed this and it seemed good, but when I went to push them together, the two halves wouldn't stick.

So of course, I got eager and did a couple spritzes of witch hazel and it set them off and they just kept growing & growing & growing. I couldn't hear them fizzing. I just stuck them in some molds and let them sit over night. I tested them this morning and they let off a nice fizz but they're super super soft and won't come out without me scraping. They also pretty much doubled in size (good thing I only had them in a half of the mold).

They seemed to be fine before I added the witch haze, but they wouldn't stick, so I figured I needed just a little more liquid. Or should I try the recipe again, just skip the witch hazel and get my burly husband to push the two halves of my bath bomb molds together?

Try the recipe without the avocado oil. That could be what's making the batch soft.

Could Sweet Almond Oil work in place? Or should I just start with shea? And one more Q (sorry, but you're about the best resource ever and I can't help it :-)) the polysorbate is a 1:1 ratio, right?

I really need to find a good use for this avocado oil. I love it and just can't find enough stuff to put it in :-)

Almond oil in this instance would work similarly as avocado. For the polysorbate yes, you would use 1:1.

Why not use your avacado soap in a mild baby soap, shaving cream or a scrub. I like cocoa butter in bath bombs, they turn out hard as a rock.
