Teach Soap

So, I'd like to try making some lip balm from scratch! But while I was pondering over all those fun little containers, I wondered what I would do if I poured out x number of sticks (I'm interested in harder lip balm) and they turned out too soft or something. Am I just looking at a loss of that amount of material and packaging? Would they be salvageable? Or should I pour my first attempts into something else (and what)?

Basically, how do you go about testing a lip balm recipe? ;D

Honestly, I just tested on a paper plate when I was starting out. Drip, drip, let it set, then try it on your lips. Worked like a charm.

I've been using a silicone cupcake mold to do my lip balm recipe testing...like making a lotion bar. Then I can reheat the bar down to adjust my recipe...and THEN pour into tubes!

I do something similar to Rachel, except I use wax paper. You can also test the balm right away on a spoon that you put in the fridge so it's cold first. This hardens up the balm faster and gives you an idea on how the balm behaves and feels.
