I followed the link and read some of the blog. I admit that I did not read a lot of it, but I read enough to know that I don't want to read any more. I do not want to need a chemistry book and a dictionary close by when I read the ingredients on a bar of soap. I don't want people who read my ingredients lists to need them either. There was just too much chemistry jargon on that blog for me.

I still don't know what Syndet Shampoo Bars are.

I love her blog. I have a cosmetic dictionary as I like to stay on top of new ingredients. I also subscribe to Happi magazine, which gives me the latest news in the cosmetic world. Just because an ingredient has a long or a fancy name doesn't mean that it's bad. Look up the INCI for fractionated coconut oil and you will see what I mean.

Shampoo bars are surfactant based products that are used to wash the hair. They are normally made as a hard bar that looks somewhat like a bar of soap. They can be formulated with lots of natural ingredients if you so wish.

I agree with the too much info. I looked at that blog too and impatience is a strong point unfortunately :) However, I do love simple straight forward info. lol - question, answer - that's my style. ^^

I would go back to her blog once you know more about different ingredients and what they do. :D It is a wealth of info and recipes.

I found this site to be much more useful:

http://thebeautybrains.com/2008/11/17/w ... rfactants/

Now that I know that some items marketed as soap are really syndets it's got me thinking. There are a lot of people who say they are allergic to the coloring and scenting agents in soap. I wonder if it's really the ingredients in syndets that they are allergic to. For years I've had a lot of trouble with rosacea and a mild form of psoriasis that affects my head, especially my face. Only prescription medications provided any relief. When I started using my home made lard based soap (recipe also had coconut and palm oil) I stopped peeling.

So many people think lye soap is harsh. We're all facing that stereotype. Now I find out that what is commonly sold as soap is not really soap. This really irritates me (literally and figuratively. I'm glad this topic came up.

I stand by my application of the military abbreviation: KISS The easier labels are to read, the better.

If you want a truthful, non scaremongering web site to read, I suggest this one> http://personalcaretruth.com/

I love Swift too... and am grateful to Soapbuddy or whoever else on here pointed me in her direction. I tend to pick and choose the information I want.

She actually has rosacea type skin herself (Swift that is, not Soapbuddy...!) and has a whole post on the rosacea skin here: http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/2 ... -type.html

But if that's too much, in another post, she mentions "Chamomile, honeysuckle, lavender, and definitely witch hazel." being really good for rosacea prone skin.

I tried typing in "rosacea" to the search function... and it came up with loads of stuff. The main thing of interest is the recipies, so if you don't want too much of the science, start by skipping to the recipies, and then if you want to know why she used something, have a scroll down. I do a lot of this when I'm forumulating as I'm really getting into lotions and creams now... need to buy more pots!

Wow, Anne-Marie... looking at that Personal Care blog now... that's loads of fun! (Yes... I am a geek... where fun sometimes = learning new shiny things... there is no hope for me in this respect...) The stuff on ingredients is great. Seems kinda full on at first glance, till you scroll down and read some of the titles of posts and the snippets there. I may be gone some time now...

I'm not a chemist and all the technical talk goes right on past me - but I've found that if you keep reading Swift also explains everything in basic layman's terms. When it comes to lotions and similar products she is my number one go-to information source. I love the way she has sections devoted to each ingrediant - you can see exactly what cocoa butter does, what hazelnut oil is good for, when to and when not to use ingrediants, etc. She rocks, IMO!
