So what do you all think about lotion bars for dogs that are scented with citronella, eucalyptus, and lemongrass . I think it would help them smell nice and keep away bugs, but will they lick it and get sick or worse????

My dogs certainly would
Remember, dogs are not humans and do not have the same reactions to EO's. And how would you get the lotion bar past the fur? I would think it would just clump up on their hair and sit like wax, until they lick it off. I would say no to this idea.

A little baking soda on my guys in between baths is all they really need. And since we don't have tics and such here, I don't really have to worry. The occasional mosquito, but nothing too bad.

Lavender Lady is much more versed in the use of EO's, so maybe she'll chime in.

I agree. I wouldn't use products with essential oils on dogs. Their skin can be really sensitive - especially little dogs.

My beagle is short haired and I see no reason I would apply lotion to his skin. If I was looking to make him smell better - other than a bath - I would probably think more about a spray or maybe a very thin liquid that I could rub over his coat. And yes, you would need to do some research on what you could put into those that could be absored or eatten and not cause concerns. Keep in mind that someone who used something like this might be prone to "over do it" just so their dog does not smell like a dog. I think from a dogs preference the worse they smell the better!

Thanks everyone for your input. As for EO's and dogs they are in ALL natural dog products including my shampoos and sprays. I just was not sure why I never have seen them in lotion bars for dogs. I use my own on myself and after petting my dogs they smell nice and shine, not trying to, just happens. All the people at the dog park always comment on how good my dogs look and smell. We live in Florida so always have flea issues (not us thank God) so that is where the thought process came from. But I will 86 it for now on your advice.

Hey DeverSoap, I would not try to get it past the fur, it would just be to repel. I do not use EO's in my personal lotion bars and they do not seem to lick it off after I pet them, but never really put directly on them on purpose.

A lotion bar made with the right oils and EO's is fine. I make and use fur butter on my big guy in the winter. It is great for his skin and coat. I do not use it on my little dude though, he only weighs 3 lbs and the amounts of most EO's are just way too small for me to accurately measure. Although I do use a bug away spray on him, but it is with an extremely low concentration of EO's, mainly it is water. Now the big guy gets adult doses of Eo's and he is fine. The ASPCA use to have a section on EO's, I haven't been there for a while to see if it is still there, but you may want to check it out.
HOWEVER, if you have cats, do not use the lotion bar, fur butter or sprays on your dogs as cats cannot tolerate ingesting EO's, or even being cooped up in a room where they are being disbursed. They must be able to get away to an EO free air room!
