An article in our Sunday newspaper caught my eye this week. "What's in a basic cold cream?" There was a list of ingredients, and what their function was. Glycerin, cetyl alcohol, glycerol stearate, propylparaben. No surprises there, but then I saw sodium hydroxide. "Otherwise known as caustic soda, it adjusts the pH levels, reducing the cream's acidity". I found this quite interesting. Do all commercial cold creams use this in their formula, and do any home cream & lotion makers use it?

I think I would rather use citric acid.

Lye is used in a lot of things. Creams and lotions to change the pH, toothpaste, pickles and pretzels.
