I am working on something for my bath bombs; I would like for them to change color when they start fizzing, does anyone know how to do that? Thank you.

Do you mean like a chemical reaction between the bomb and the water? Or maybe do one side blue and the other yellow.... when they mix you get green. Or one side red and one side blue to mix to purple? It would take quite a few trys to get the shades just right I would think... and then if the water is colored that strongly could it color someones skin?

Noni... I would be careful not to dunk your head if you use the blue... you may find yourself in the ER for unexplained cynosis
I had a patient once where his skin turned blue from a cardiac medication he was taking. A very rare side effect!

I've turned my daughter purple before. Ooops! She didn't seem to mind too much, but well, I was embarrassed taking her to school the next day. I knew I wouldn't be selling that batch :) I love my little tester baby :)

Brandy

Noni, if you figure out how to do it, would you mind sharing? That sounds like a really cool idea!

Please can you let us know if you find something that works? I would love to know how to do this!

Haha! I found the answer!

...now if only I could get this stuff in the UK!

http://www.thesage.com/catalog/Colors.html#GrapeColor

"Color only turns purple in an alkaline environment. Color is blue in lotions or melt & pour soap base. To mix a large quantity, add 1/2 tsp color to1 oz dropper bottle, fill with water, insert dropper tip and place over cap on bottle. Shake well."

Fruity essential oils, especially lemon and citrus ones, are more likely to be alkaline. So is rosemary and thyme. Also almonds are alkalising (I put a few drops of sweet almond oil in many things anyway) along with olive oil, flax oil, hemp oil, avocado oils, evening primrose oil and coconut oil. I expect if you put the dye on the outside, and the alkalising ingredients in the middle of your bath bomb, then it might change the colour of the water around it as it fizzes down. Naturally, it would blend in after a while, and what you would could probably end up with is more ph neutral bath water, once it all dissapates (if you were clever!). Now I need to work out how to get me some of this stuff, some ph papers and test it out! Think I will be talking nicely to my family in the US!

I think it would be ok. Just pick what essential oils you want in the bath bomb. I would do something like...

Jasmine and/or rose. Make bath bomb mixture with that and pack it into your mould, but in a hollow fashion, so a thick layer rather than filled right up.

Then do a mixture with perhaps orange, lemon and neroli. Pack that into the centre. bit.

Make sure you have put your grape thingy colour in both sections. Then put the two halves together to make your bath bomb.

When it comes out, it should have the jasmine/rose on the outside, with the orange and lemon and neroli in the middle. Hopefully, when you put it in the water, the outer layer will turn the water blue, as it fizzes away first, then the middle will turn it purple after that. When I talk my cousin into buying some of the colour and sending it for me, I will test it! (Unless anyone knows how I can get this in the uk?!!)

I did this kind of thing today... but with other stuff in the middle, rather than varying the colours or oils. Seemed to work ok. (Todays was a honey and jasmine bath bomb, with a melty cocoa butter and honey bit in the centre!)
