Rubbing alcohol will sanitize, not sterilize.

Heat is required to sterilize anything. Moist heat (steam) requires holding the items at 121 Ã‚Â°C or 134 Ã‚Â°C for 15 - 20 minutes. Dry heat requires a hot air oven at 160 Ã‚Â°C (320 Ã‚Â°F) for 2 hours. Many, maybe most or all, plastic containers will not hold up to either of these methods. Dishwashers do not provide effective sterilization as they commonly heat to 49 and 60 Ã‚Â°C (120 and 140 Ã‚Â°F), which can actually promote the growth of bacteria. Many containers also don't hold up well to boiling. Additionally, these heat levels can also cause plastic containers to give off toxic fumes.

Also, unless you have a clean/white room, which is impossible for home crafters, as soon as you remove the containers from the "sterilizing unit" they are assaulted by whatever microorganisms are in the air.

You can sanitize with a mild bleach solution, 90% rubbing alcohol, or a perfumer's base with 90% SDA-40B 200 proof alcohol and 10% distilled water (although it's is rather expensive for this purpose).

If the containers are new, clean and never been used, you don't need to sanitize them.
