Hi All

I've just started making M & P soaps as a hobby - and I'm also playing around with lip balms now too...

I just made this recipe - and I'm happy with the colour I've achieved - but it's too matt for me.... I'm used to lip gloss - but for health reasons - can't use commercial gloss any more ...

I'm wondering if anyone has a recipe for a gloss or glossy balm I could put over the top ? Only need small quantity.... many thanks in advance - Mel x

Here is the original recipe.

Sheer Lipstick Recipe by Anne-Marie Faiola

2 oz. beeswax
2 oz. Grapeseed Oil
1/4 oz. Wheatgerm Oil
2 tsp. Zinc Oxide (by volume - optional - may substitute titanium dioxide)
4 tsp. lip safe mica (by volume)

I wouldn't use wheatgerm oil, due to it's short shelf life. I would add castor to your formula for the shine.

I'm making lip balms now all the time and I've been using the Castor oil and that does add shine. Also, I haven't made any yet with the titanium dioxide or the substitution you used but I have bought some this week and I notied that it appeared more matte that the recipe I use with the castor oil. I'd suggest not using that unless you absolutly have to and using the castor oil and I think you'll be happy with the results. Also I just looked at the recipe that you made, I have a copy of the same one and here's what it says:
Sheer Lipstick Recipe by Anne-Marie Faiola
2 oz. beeswax
2 oz. Grapeseed Oil
1/4 oz. Wheatgerm Oil
2 tsp. Zinc Oxide (by volume - optional - may substitute titanium dioxide)
4 tsp. lip safe mica (by volume)
The zinc Oxide will provide a opaque, matte effect to your lipstick. If you use just mica, you will have a more sheer lip balm.
Melt the beeswax in a double boiler. Once fully melted, add the Grapeseed and Wheatgerm oil. Pour your colorant into the
double boiler and stir well. Let this mixture sit until mixture begins to thicken slightly (thus suspending the colorant better) and
pour into jars or tubes

Here's another one that I've been using and then I just add a little but of castor oil to it and it is shiney and a little softer too I love it and it's from Anne Marie as well:
Easy Lip Butter Recipe from Anne-Marie
Making lip butters is fun! It's also fairly easy and lends itself to much experimentation and personalization with little worry of totally
ruining a batch.
I like to use a recipe that includes:

1 part Wax
2 parts Vegetable Butter
1 part Liquid Oil

So a specific recipe for an 8 oz. batch would look like this (all measured by weight):

2 oz. Beeswax
4 oz. Shea Butter
2 oz. Olive Oil

However, you can mix and match oils. Instead of using Shea Butter, you could use another semi-solid oil such as Mango Butter or
Illipe Butter. If you wanted to use another liquid oil, any liquid oil will work - from Almond oil to Hempseed oil. Essentially, you just
have to make sure that the solids help to equal out the liquids so that the mixture will be a soft, easily spreadable butter.
To use the flavor oils, you'll want to use 1% to 3% by weight, so the recipe above, with 8 oz. of oil, would use .09 oz. to .27 oz.
flavor by weight. Add the flavor oil after all the ingredients are melted and stir in thoroughly. Have fun!
Happy Soaping!
Anne-Marie

thanks Lisa - that's so good to know.

I've just found this recipe.... See if you like it ? Mel xx

Lip Gloss (Liquid) - for Roller Ball Lip Balm Tube

34ml Jojoba
10ml Castor Oil
5ml Glycerine
1ml Vitamin E
12 drops Evening Primrose Oil
Optional
12 drops Flavour Oil or to taste
1/6 teaspoon shimmering Lip Safe Mica
You only need a small amount of mica to get a nice shimmer, too much may clog the roller ball.

Measure all your ingredients and add to a jug with a pourable lip
Stir well to thoroughly combine the ingredients
Add optional flavour and stir well to thoroughly combine
Add optional Mica and again stir well to thoroughly combine. A heavy Glitter Mica may settle to the bottom so use a lighter Mica so that it suspends well throughout the mixture. It also means there is less chance of it clogging up the roller ball.
If the roller ball applicator does clog up, undo the applicator and rinse it in warm water until it moves freely again.

I'm planning to try this recipe this weekend. I have the tubes with the sponge applicators. Any idea what I could use in place of the evening primrose oil? I have all of the other ingredients...

You could use Almond or Fractionated coconut oil.

I see that this is actually an old post that was revived, but i still have to say that wheat germ oil is actually great to add. Aside from the fact that it has a shelf life 1of 2 - 18 mths (but must be refrigerated after opening), it is very high in vitamin E and essential fatty acids, so it is a wonderful addition to any skin care product, but I really like it in my lip balms. Additionally, because of its high vitamin E content, (a natural antioxidant which helps to prevent rancidity) it is often added to other carrier oils to help lengthen their shelf life.

Shelf life of wheatgerm is 6 months, but that's only if it's refrigerated. Normally you would not put your lip balm in the fridge, so the actual shelf life will be shorter.

Anytime I make an oil or butter blend, I always calculate the whole shelf life according to the shortest shelf life of an oil or butter. If you want a nice addition to a lip balm, add some jojoba oil. It's actually a plant wax with a extremely long shelf life. Or use olive oil. That one will last about 2 years.

Thank you for letting me know Tammy. I don't buy cosmetics, so I would not have read the ingredient label. You got me curious now, so I will next time I go to the store. :D

Thanks for the advice everyone! I went with almond oil in place of the evening primrose and I added a bit of shea butter to thicken it up a bit (because I'm using the sponge applicator, not the roller ball). I used a few drops of peppermint EO and I love it so far! Here's a pic (on display with my other project of the evening, Valentine's soap...)
