I am still learning about doing all this stuff. A couple months ago I made my first batch of lip balm as gifts for my mom and myself, and they turned out great. About a month ago, I made some more, using the same recipe, and they seemed fine at the time, but here's the problem. Both times I made 3 colors. The first time, all 3 colors came out fine, and the 2nd time, all 3 colors came out grainy. Here's the recipe I used.
* 20% Beeswax (i used the white/bleached since I wanted to add color, and the cocoa butter was already yellow) * 25% solid at room temperature oil (Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Shea Butter, Lanolin, etc.) * 15% brittle at room temperature oil (Undeodorized Cocoa Butter, Palm Kernel Oil, etc.) * 40% liquid oil at room temperature (Sweet Almond Oil, Olive Oil, Avocado Oil, etc.)
So my question is, the only thing I did different was the 2nd time I made more of them, so the % was upped, but the actual measurement was. My scale measures to 1/8 of an oz, but all my measurements if they weren't even number's they were even fractions 1/2, 1/4 etc, so I could get exact decimals from the percentages. The first balms were nice and smooth, but the 2nd batch Idk what went wrong. Did I pour too hot, too cold??? One thing I did notice is it's not just the top thats grainy, its the whole thing. The top is fairly solid till you start to rub it on your lips and then it comes off in grainy chunks. I will also say if it helps, that they are in tubes, not lip butter pots. I think I would almost be able to salvage them in the pots, because you use your fingers anyways, but I just don't know what could have happened. (On a sidenote, I used lip safe micas from BB, but I don't think it matters because even the uncolored is problematic. Any help would be appreciated.
