Teach Soap

Is there a guide as to the percentages for lotion? Such as ? % of water to ?% of oil/butter to ? % e- wax. It seems that recipes are all over the spectrum. Also does anyone use Arrowroot powder or similar to cut down on the greasiness? I just made a batch of lotion using a new e-wax and also added a Tbl of arrowroot powder and terrible seperation problems. I'm not sure what caused it, but I added a little more e-wax, one I had not the new one and rebeat it and it came together. The recipe I used was:
6 oz grapseed oil
3 oz mango butter
3 0z Aloe
6 oz green tea
1 oz e wax
.1 oz Germall
.1 Vit E
.6 EO
.1Arrowroot powder

After this was all combined it looked like baby spit up, all seperated. Then I added .5 oz of another e-wax, rebeat for another minute and it was emulsified. I have made lots of cream without this problem, but wanted to make a lotion for the summer. What did I do wrong?

Water content for lotions are generally at least 60% or more and oils are somewhere between 10-20%. Ewax is fine at 5%.

Hopefully someone can chime in and give a better input

Oh and I forgot to mention that cyclomethicone works wonders to cut down on the "grease" factor.

What is the % of water that you used? I usually do 60 to 65% water.

I used aloe and green tea for the water part and it was 44%. So my formula was 44% oil and 44% water and 5% e wax. The other 7% was essential oil, arrowroot powder, and Germall.

44% sounds high for oil. I keep mine at 16% and get alot of good feedback on it. I would suggest less oil and more water.

Thanks, Bruce. I remelted the "lotion" today and added more water to bring the percentages more inline, approx 16% oil. I'm still not sure why I had such bad seperation. I used wax from a supplier I had not used before. I also added arrowroot powder at the end, should that have gone in earlier with the water? Is there a way to test the ewax? Can I just whip up some oil water and wax to see if it is emulsifying? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
