Anyone know good and reasonable priced testing labs for Aerobic Plate Count (APC), yeast/mold, and or challenge test?

I don't have a lab to reccomend but wanted to share what I did. I was lucky, I know someone on the inside at what may be the top lab in the country. I sent my lotion in for testing and got so much more than what I expected for service and it was all for free. Not only that but the bottle of lotion stayed at the lab and has generated many sales as well. Sorry I am not giving much for details but I am making sure there is no chance anyone I know could get into any kind of trouble.

snowdriftfarm sells an excellent lab in a box,or if you know anyone in high school the science labs are always willing to test things.

Question: How often do you have to send samples to be tested? Would it be for every batch of lotion you make?

I have never done the lotion thing, nor have I ever had my products tested. Then again, I've mostly only done this as a hobby and I am still new to this. If you buy it from a premade base and just add your scent color, do you have to have it tested?

I would hardly call this kit a
'poor mans kit" and it does test for yeast and fungi! Some people do not have access to a lab Soapbuddy, what exactly do you see wrong with this kit?

Chek-It: Home Test Lab in a Box for water-based solutions tm is an agar-coated plastic slide attached to the cap of a plastic vial, which serves as a growth chamber.

One side of the slide is coated with nutrient agar to test for bacteria. The other side is coated with malt agar to test for fungus and yeast.

It is incubated at 75F-90F for 24 to 48 hours. This screening test will detect total aerobic bacteria, yeast and fungi in your products.

The FDA does not expect cosmetic products to be absolutely sterile, but they must be free from pathogens. If the total counts are non-detect, then you have reasonable assurance your products are acceptable.

Positive results must be investigated at commercial microbiology lab to ensure the absence of pathogens before products should be sold. If Chek-It tm results are non-detect, a good preservation system will prevent growth of any organisms introduced during use.

Each Chek-It Kit tm comes with 10 slides, 10 double-tipped sterile swabs, instructions and result interpretation guide.

Snowdrift Farm Chek-It Kit tm slides are found to comply with NCCLS standards as set out in document M-22-A Quality Assurance Standards for Commercially Prepared Microbiological Culture Media (ISBN 1-56238-102-6, ISSN 0273-3099).

Chek-It Home Test Kit tm (10 tests per kit)

Here is what the FDA guidelines say about bacteria in cosmetic products:

"Cosmetic products are not expected to be aseptic; however, they must be completely free of high-virulence microbial pathogens, and the total number of aerobic microorganisms per gram must be low. Since there are no widely acceptable standards for numbers, temporary guidelines are used instead. For eye-area products, counts should not be greater than 500 colony forming units (CFU)/g; for non-eye-area products, counts should not be greater than 1000 CFU/g. The presence of pathogens would be particularly important in evaluating as unacceptable a cosmetic with a marginally acceptable count, e.g., 400 CFU/g for an eye-area product. Pathogens or opportunistic pathogens whose incidence would be of particular concern, especially in eye-area cosmetic products, include S. aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, P. aeruginosa and other species, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Some microbes normally regarded as nonpathogenic may be opportunistically pathogenic, e.g., in wounds."

For a novice with a home kit, you would not know the exact count of the aerobic bacteria, yeast and fungi in your product(s). You would only see whether or not your product is contaminated. I'd rather sent my sample to be tested in a proper lab. I do not have access to a local lab, but samples can be easily mailed to a lab for testing. Those tests are not that expensive either. I am no expert on pathogens, so I would rather have someone do it for me that knows what they are doing. I am also sure that those labs have more sanitary conditions under which they test, which would be difficult to replicate at home.

I agree with Soapbuddy. I would prefer to have a professional who knows what they are looking at determine if my products are sanitary or not. I would have no clue what I am looking at in that test kit. Plus, reading those directions, the insulation time at that high of a temp, I have no where to keep it that stays a stable temp in that range. I have a hard enough time reading the test strips for my salt water fish tanks and that's just color matching! LOL!

I saw on the Sage Script site that for the two tests it would come out to be around $30 which would not be a problem for me. The challenge tests however can be several hundred dollars, correct?

If that's the case how often would one get the challenge tests done?

Here is the quote I got. . .I think they are pretty high. They are in Torrance, CA--BioScreen Testing. Please do not forward this on. I haven't done business with them but wanted to get a sugar scrub tested.

The aerobic plate count and yeast and mold count is used to test cosmetic products.

Analysis
Code
Qty.
Price per sample
Aerobic Plate Count
Turn around time 2-3 days
Sample size is 2 oz.
10001R
1 $33.00

2-5 $23.10

6-10 $19.80

11 or more $16.50

Gram Stain *
Turn around time 1 – 2 days
10001G
1
$19.00/organism

Microorganism Identification *
Turn around time 5-7 days
10160R
1
$129.00/organism

Can anyone tell me how these cost compare to their competitors?

wow, all that sounds complicated. I wonder how the results read when you get them back. If it is a bunch of legally sciencey jargon, or if they just do "ok/not ok" lol

I was reading supposedly if you buy the premade bases from a reputable company ( i was looking at wholesale supplies plus, anyone like their bases?) that the testing, especially for lotions will be done for you, and you don't have to do it yourself, assuming you only add the appropriate amount of color and FO.
Is that correct from what you guys have experienced. WSP says on their informational videos and FAQ that they do that testing for you. I'm sure most of the reputable companies premade bases are that way though.
