Ok. Can someone explain to me the weight/volume thing in regards to lotion.
I am looking into trying the premade BB lotion base and it says 1 gallon is about 124 ounces by weight.
So if I look at a store bought lotion bottle and it says 8 oz., does that mean I should buy the BB 8 oz bottle size if I want something similar. Or are they weighing it in some way that is deceiving? What I mean is, what do the store bought lotions mean when they say 8 oz. That it is 8 oz of liquid or as heavy as half a pound? 124/8 is 15.5 so is it safe to say I should get about 15 8 oz. bottles full? Or does that mean They will just be heavy enough to weigh 8 oz on scale (plus weight of the bottle) but not actually be holding 8 oz? Again bear with me here. I think its so much fun creating all this stuff, but the math just hurts my head! lol

Depending which bottles you want to use, some 8 oz. bottles actually hold more than 8 ozs. Even though you have one gallon of product, always account for 1% in wastage.

Soapbuddy.... doesn't it say in the booklet from Brambleberry for makeing lotions that a particular sized bottle can be labeled in FLUID ozs if it is a lotion? So she would be able to label her 8oz bottle as 8fl oz? I am also a little confused on the subject. :?

I know that depending on which formula I use for my lotions, I can either fit 4.5 oz in a 4 oz bottle or 3.5 oz in a 4 oz bottle. I fill to the top. I go by weight, not volume.

No, I'm not messing with you. My 4 oz. bottle contains 4.5 ozs. of my lotion or gel, so that's what I put on the label. There are differences in molecular weight. Water doesn't weight the same as almond oil, for example. So some ingredients will fill the bottle all the way to the top with 4 ozs., some you need to add more to fill the bottle to the top. I am not affilitated with BrambleBerry other than as a long time customer.

Most commercial lotions will do *fluid* ounces on their labels. This is because the fill line levels look the same from item to item if you do fluid ounces, versus weight ounces (which can vary in fill line levels substantially).

When you are labeling for resale, you can do fluid ounces on your label which saves substantial time for the filling process because you do not have to weigh each bottle.

I hope this helps. If you have detailed labeling questions, Marie Gale wrote the best book on labeling (currently out of stock at BB and on Marie's site): http://www.brambleberry.com/Soap-And-Co ... P3663.aspx
