Hi all this is my first post but I've been lurking for a bit now. This forum has been immensely helpful in getting my lotion recipe to where it is now. I wanted some feedback from you all to see if my recipe is decent, or where I could change it a little bit.

Thanks!!

water 68.00%
glycerine 3.00%
grapeseed oil 10.00%
jojoba oil 5.00%
rosehip seed oil 4.00%
emulsifying wax NF 4.50%
optiphen 0.50%
cyclomethicone 1.00%
corn starch 3.00%
fragrance 1.00%

I don't use glycerin in my lotions. I don't care for the feel. As far as cyclomethicone & corn starch, both give you the same afterfeel. I would leave the corn starch out as it is harder to preserve & at 3% is too much.

Ah I see. I overlooked that I have both included. I'll replace the cornstarch and put 1% into the rosehip seed oil and 2% into the water.

If i remove the glycerine, where should I add the 3%?

Thanks!

Will do! Thanks for the feedback. Once my package arrives in the mail I'll try it out and post what my results are.

Thanks so much for the help soapbuddy.

Yup I actually made the batch last night. However, it is a bit more runny than I would like. Is there anything I can do to salvage the batch I made as well as improve future batches?

Maybe I should lower the water and up the oil and e-wax. Can't really gift runny lotion :(

Hmm... It's also separating. The water and oil I mean. I guess that means I should up my e-wax?

Here is the process I went through:

1. Heat up oils and e-wax
2. Heat up water
3. Add cyclomethicon to the water
4. Add water to the oils/e-wax
5. Stir
6. Let cool to 140F
7. Add Optiphen and fragrances
8. Stir some more
9. Pour into bottle.

Should I be stirring longer? I'm just using any implement to hand stir.

Thanks in advance!

Try upping the e-wax to 5%. Do you have any stearic acid?

Nope, no stearic acid. Will such a small increase in e-wax help?

Also, should I be stirring it in a different way? Or changing anything with my process?

I hope you are using a stick blender. A fork or a spoon will not be enough. Yes, a small amount of stearic acid can make a difference. Cetyl alcohol helps to thicken too.

I added some more e-wax and it combined the two. So I guess I just had too little of it. However, it is still a bit runny. Is there anything I can add to it besides stearic acid to thicken it a bit more. Tempted to add cornstarch because it's something I have lying around :)

I don't know why this batch is so runny. The past 2 batches I made were ok, but those previous batches didn't have any optiphen or cyclo. Could either of those two be the culprit?

Don't add cornstarch! It's perfect bug food and it will be harder for your preservative to keep up. I would leave the cyclo out. For my formula, I can't use Phenonip; it's not compatible.
