Teach Soap

I have been making a cocoa butter lotion for a while and have not had any problems with it seperating. But now that it's summer and I keep my bottle on my windowsill in my bathroom, it has started to seperate. I checked the other bottles from that batch that are packed away and they are fine. Will keeping lotion in the sun cause it to seperate? BTW I use E-wax and Phenoip in my lotions.

I don't make it in huge batches because I like a variaty of scents, so a small batch is
1.5oz Cocoa Butter
1 oz Almond Oil
.5oz Grape Seed Oil
.75 oz E-Wax
.5oz Glycerin
8oz Distilled Water
and about .75 oz Pheniop
.5oz Fragrance, Essential oil

If anyone sees any problems with this recipe please let me know!! It works wonders on skin, but I'm not sure why it sometimes seperates. I have left a bottle in my car and it gets hot, but it was ok. I'm just wondering if it's the hot and sun.

I have not experimented alot with lotions but I do have a recipe that makes great lotion time after time and based off of that I would suggest using no more than 16% oils/butters in your recipe. Also up the ewax from 4% to 5%. Good luck and let us know how the next batch turns out.

I'm by no means an expert, but doesn't the phenonip @ .7oz seem a little high for your recipe amount? I'm not sure. Soapbuddy will know tho.

I'm sorry it's not .75oz of Phenoip, it's 3/4 tsp.

Reccomended usage for Phenonip is 0.5%-1.0% 3/4 tsp. is not accurate. I would suggest of getting a scale that measures to tenth of a gram. You can find a reasonably priced jewelry scales or you can get one from Jen at Lotioncrafter.com .

Well I thank you all for your help and I will be adjusting my recipe to try it out!

Ok here's another problem allong the same line. The bottle of lotion that i was having a problem wtith was made with natural cocoa butter. I normally use deodorized cocoa butter. so i ordered more deodorized butter and made 3 good batches that turned out right, then i made a few with half and half to use up the natural butter. those batches are not turning out right, some are seperating and some are really watery. Recipe is as usualy but with better % of pheniop as suggested, Anyone Help!??! Is there that much of a difference between natural and deodorized?

That's a new one - I've never heard of whether the cocoa butter is deodorized having an effect like that. I've made emulsions with both, and never had separation with the natural.

There should not be much difference between refined or unrefined in lotion making. I have used both with no problems. Have you tried it with another preservative?
