1) Just made a small batch of salt scrub, but am not so happy with the thin layer of oil that is at the top. Is this normal or did I use too much oil?

Recipe called for 1 cup sea salt 1/2 cup oil. Thanks!

2) Even though it's a small batch, what is the shelf life for this scrub? (used an AKO, RBO, Olive Oil and Soybean blend)

The shelf life is as long as the least stable oil. You could also make it emulsfied, so greasy oil on top stays mixed.

what's the usage rate for an emulsifyer? and what's your preference?

It depends on how complicated you want to get - if you want to keep it simple for starters, you can mix a bit of M&P with your scrub. About 1/2 as much soap as oil - it's pretty forgiving. Remember to give the M&P time to harden up before you judge the texture of the finished scrub.

You can also use polysorbates or emulsifiying wax - if you're interested let me know and I'll dig up rates on those.

Hi! I wanted to bump this thread b/c I have a related question. I'm playing around with salt scrubs. Been mixing salts and oil, trying to reach a consistency I like. I have ewax. I would like to try it, but I don't want to start all over. Do you think I can just melt and add a small amount to the test batch I have now? Or do I have to start with melted ewax and oil, then add salt last?

Just don't want my current test batch to go to waste of all possible. Getting low on oils. Once I find the recipe I like I need to stock up on more! :)

Thanks!

It really is the best if you melt the ewax into your oils then add the salt or sugar.

Also, I'd point out that, even though there may be no water in your scrubs at the moment, they are designed to be used in a watery environment, ie the shower for instance, with wet hands going into your tubs - all fine except if you don't add a preservative, that water could harbour bacteria and germs and then you could have a problem. If you're selling these, I'd advise a preservative to be added also, just in case.

You could package them in a tottle say, which would then reduce the possibily of water reaching the mix and less likelihood of any water borne bacterial problems arising.

Yes, if these are for sale, please add a preservative.
