You need to heat the Shea to 175 degrees and then hold it there for 20 minutes. That will keep it from turning gritty.

I honestly don't know. I use shea in my lip balms but I haven't had a problem with it turning gritty. I normally microwave all of my lip balm ingredients until the beeswax melts and I know that it takes a pretty high temp for that to happen. Have you already poured it into containers? I can tell you that it does not work to reheat it in the containers. Maybe someone else might know how to fix it once the balm is already done.
