I tried making a whipped body butter the other day. Aargh, it was frustrating, I couldn't get the consistency right. I tried a recipe I found online that was basically equal parts each of cocoa butter, shea butter, coconut oil, and apricot kernel oil. It was so liquid and would not solidify when I whipped it with a beater. I kept adding more solid oils, but still would not solidify. Perhaps my mistake was melting all my oils together first - maybe I should not melt everything down? I kept mixing and blending, putting my oil mixture in the fridge to see if it would solidify, and finally ended up with a butter that had to sit several hours before it was at it's final texture and firmness, and then it is much too hard to be called a whipped body butter. First, it wouldn't get hard, then it got too hard.

My question is, if it takes several hours for everything to cool down and come to their final consistency, when in those several hours do I whip the butter?? Also, am I not supposed to melt everything down first? Perhaps just the cocoa butter because it's so hard, but blend everything else at room temp?

Anyone making successful whipped body butter, I would really appreciate your input!!

I melt every thing down ant then put it in the fridge until a thick film forms on top and then whip it. I will say that in my experience whipping cocoa butter is a pain, it seems to soft at first when it is mixing bet it get rock hard when it sets. Also look at swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com for recipes because I think your ratios may be off but I am not sure

Thanks Rosie! You are so right about the cocoa butter, that is exactly what happened to me. I was so excited with the creamy butter I got from the cocoa butter, then came back 30 minutes later - rock hard. Oh well, at least I'll know next time.

I made an awesome whipped butter!! I used shea as the base butter, mango butter, sweet almond oil, fo's and eo's, and tapioca starch, as we know that shea is a pretty greasy butter. I agree about the cocoa butter, I've found that cocoa butter works GREAT along with some beeswax pastilles as well for a solid lotion/massage bar. Lemme hunt that recipe down in my notes, if you'd like it, I'd be more than happy to share!!!

Depending on which ingredients are used, whipped butter can take up to three days to reach the final consistency.

Is it not true, Irena, that tapioca starch should be used to "soak up" the excess greasiness if shea butter is used as the base butter?
