So as long as I don't add water or a rancidity-prone oil then I don't need any preservative in my lotion/creme, right? Why can't i melt some cocoa and shea butters together w/ some cold-pressed jojoba & liquid coconut on a double-boiler without the preservative?

You can. That combo sounds very similar to an unwhipped body butter.

Just as long as it's oils and/or butters and has no water, you don't need a preservative. The exception to this would be a scrub, since there is a good chance that water will get introduced into the product.

You can absolutely do that, why would you think you couldn't?

i dunno, b/c there are no such products on the shelves at the stores. And bc the BB lotion/cream tutorial says everything has to have an emulsifier and a preservative. But i HATE preservatives and don't want to put any in a leave-on product, if possible.

You totally can! Just keep in mind though that it will be more greasy/oily than a lotion or a water based creme.

You might want to rethink about those preservatives. This is essential oils and water.
