I hope everyone is enjoying this lovely Sunday afternoon.

I have a general question about making hair conditioner. I am a newby to the world of soap and toiletries and I recently made my first batch of conditioner, just for myself and my DD. Because I'm just getting my feet wet, I ordered a kit from WSP that had all the ingredients and a recipe. I am no where near to the creating my own recipe place but I have yet to find the perfect store bought conditioner for DDs very long curly hair so I thought I would give it a try myself. The base for the conditioner is Stearalkonium Chloride.

I followed the directions and the last step was to bottle and the recipe says that it will thicken as it sits, but that if I would like a thicker consistency to add more of the pastilles. After letting the bottles sit over night, they were still very runny so I dumped them back in a bowl, reheated and added more pastilles. After letting it sit for about 10 hours, the bottles still looked very runny so I started to dump them back into the bowl to reheat them. What I found was that although the top of the bottle of conditioner was still runny, but once I poured that off the concoction in the middle of the bottle was actually very thick. This was true for most of the bottles although the amount of runny to thick was different in each bottle.

What I did from that point was dump all of the bottles into my bowl and whisk it all together until all the contents were the same consistency. I then put it back into the bottles.

So my question is - do you usually bottle right away? If I let it sit long enough, would it have come to an even consistency? The bottles FELT room temp but was 10 hours not long enough to wait?

If any one has an input, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It can take up to 3 days before the conditioner reaches its final consistency. If you are just playing around, you can add it to a ziploc bag. After the 3 day period, you can snip a small corner of the bag, then gently squeeze the contents into the bottle. It is best not to reheat because you can negate the preservative. It could allow mold, germs and bacteria to grow.

Thanks so much - I didn't realize it took that long, I thought I was just waiting for it to reach room temp. While I was reheating it I did think about my preservative, but with DDs long, curly hair though - conditioner doesn't have time to "spoil" around here. :D
