Unfortunately I've discovered that it's the cocoa butter that I'm allergic to. I was wondering why I OCCASIONALLY break out with the lip balm (worse than anything!) and sometimes not. Then I realized, one certain lip balm (chocolate/bacon flavored one!) had cocoa butter in it to enhance the flavors of chocolatelyness. THAT'S the one that made me break out all over (I'm assuming because I ingested some of it). SO, now my question:

My current Lotion Bar recipe: coconut oil, beeswax, cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil and vitamin e. Does anyone know of a comparable butter to replace the cocoa butter with? I do use shea butter in my lip balms and wondered if that would work but it's the ONLY other butter that I've ever even worked with.

You guys have been so helpful and I appreciate any ideas!

Just a question, a few people have told me just to make them as normal and wear gloves and not USE the products. Would you make and sell a product that you can't use on yourself?

Cocoa butter is a hard butter. You can replace it with mango or shea butter, but you will need to tweak your recipe for the same hardness.

You could get a little illipe butter and give that a try. It is nice and hard like cocoa butter, and shares many of the same attributes, but shouldn't cause the same reaction. Unless you happened to be allergic to it too! You can get it from "" or you can google it for other shops. Another nice butter in Babassu, it isn't hard like cocoa or illipe though. I get mine from .

I've had some terrible reactions to cocoa! Have even had breathing problems after eating part of a piece of 'fudge' cake. Hasn't stopped me from eating chocolate though LOL
