Gross!

16 days or less and that's all it took for very visible mold to show up. Way less time than a lot of non-preservers say you can use non-preserved products, they usually say to use within 30 days.

Some of those people STILL don't think they need to preserve their products! Just because you see it doesn't mean it isn't there! When milk goes past it's expiration date do they wait for it to grow mushrooms?!

I just finished reading a book called EcoBeauty and it's just awful. There are a lot of recipes for "lotions" and other water based B & B recipes and not once do they mention preservatives of any kind. A lot of them had you adding pureed fruits/vegetables, sugars, etc. Instead they say, "Will keep in the refrigerator 3-4 weeks or 4-6 weeks". How much bacteria do you think these people will be slathering on them at 6 weeks without a preservative?
It did amuse me to see a recipe for a balm that was only oil, butter & beeswax, but said to use within 4-6 weeks.

Of course I didn't expect too much from the book since right in the beginning it states that if your cosmetics have warning labels on them, then the product isn't natural. Umm...okay. Someone obviously doesn't know about cosmetic labeling regulations.

That's also part of the reason I stopped making lotions at all. I prefer products with no water (except soap of course). I don't mind using preservatives but if I don't have to worry about it, all the better. I do add preservatives to my sugar scrubs simply because I like to use it in the shower and so water is introduced. It's scary to think of all the little critters that we can't see. Eww...

I've always checked lotion labels for preservatives, is that not a 'normal' thing to do? LOL Wouldn't be the first time that I thought something was completely normal when it really wasn't!
