Hello again !

I have been asked by a friend about using beet juice or powder in lip balm as a colorant. I know it does color my cutting board a pretty pink !

Has anyone used things like beet, prickly pear, tomato, annatto seed, or alkanet fro lip balm colorants ? Seems like it would be popular with the scrupulous, and vegans.

Beet juice or powder is only water soluble. It won't mix with oils and butters in a lip balm. You can infuse annatto in oil to get some color.

beet - no
prickly pear - no
tomato - no
annatto seed - infused yes
alkanet - infused yes

Don't forget cocoa powder. It gives a nice light tan sheen, plus it tastes yummy

How would you deal with the FDA regulation end of this though if you sell these? Would you just not say that they're in the lip balm for color but for some other reason? I've seen people that use vegetable/herbal colorants in their balms & lotions and always wondered about the regulation part of it.

Well ...

If you can add cocoa, I don't see why you couldn't add beet powder or prickly pear juice. (Makes a really beautiful fuchsia !) And you're talking about adding teeny amounts. Besides, it's got to be marginally safer than lab created minerals with lab created dyes sprayed on them. Or maybe that's the problem ? Real food like beets is still grown in (gasp !) dirt and not in a clean, sterile lab ! :mrgreen:

But I'm sure the powers that be have an opinion. I don't what it is, but I'm sure they have one. :lol:

It is about the solubility, and you really want to infuse your oils because many of the powders can make the balm have a gritty feeling on the lips.
