Teach Soap

Last year I got my hands on some handmade lotion. At some point, before my adventures in lotion making class, I took the time to write down the ingredients of this stuff. (Which was difficult, as the ingredients were listed in a near-microscopic print.)

Anyway, I went looking for my notes the other day, in preparation for my first adventure in lotion making (I don't count the stuff in the class.) And I discovered that one of the ingredients is canola oil.

Don't get me wrong - it's nice lotion. (And yes, she does use a preservative! ) But I really don't want to use canola when I make my version of it. (I'm using babassu instead of coconut as well, but that's another matter!) I don't use canola in my soapmaking, either.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a substitute? I have access to most of the usual suspects, and some slightly more exotic ones as well.

You can sub any liquid oil for another liquid oil straight across in lotion recipes.

Is canola considered a light, medium, or heavy-weight oil?

I know the voices in my head aren't real, but they sure have some great ideas!

Try almond oil, or even better, jojoba oil. To make it thicker, shea butter.

So many oils and butters, so little time! I love rice bran oil in my lotion too, as well as apricot kernel oil (which is very similar to sweet almond oil), jojoba (although it is very expensive it is still worth using), avocado, hemp and, and, and, and, and, and..... Experiment, experiment, experiment, experiment! Have fun with it!!
