Teach Soap

this is probably a dumb question but I'm getting mixed answers on the web so, this will be my first time making lip balm and I know that peppermint EO can be an irritant but my dad really wants a Burt's bees style lip balm and I was wondering if there is a percentage rate that is "safe" for lips

Peppermint can be too strong or sting if you go too high. Normal usage for lip balms is between 0.5 - 1.5% - I'd start at 0.5% and test. You can always add just a little bit more, but you can't take away. Make sure that the peppermint oil that you have is GRAS and it's from a reputable vendor, not like one of the MLM companies. If you don't have a very accurate scale, get some pipettes and add 1/2 ml. of peppermint oil to 1 oz. of lip balm.

Doesn't B. Bees also have menthol?

I looked at the ingriedent list and it has no menthol just peppermint and thanks soo much for your help soapbuddy and I'll make the lip balm today!

Ingredients: cera alba (beeswax, cire d’abeille), cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, mentha piperita (peppermint) oil, lanolin, tocopherol, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, glycine soja (soybean) oil, canola oil (huile de colza), limonene.
