I do not like lavender on its own, but did one with lavender and patch... it is turning out very, very nice.
I have done lavender and tea tree - I have a good friend that just adores that combo.
As for the kelp.... it is very hard to hid in the soap scent. Even when using patch when the soap gets wet the 'fish' smell can come through. I keep searching for something to hide the scent but so far no luck.
And you are right about the cost, but there are some that believe anything man made will not be good for them. We have some friends that are into that right now. It seems as if the 'organic' movement has just hit the northwest and people are jumping on the bandwagon!
